2 other theories I read was that the lady is only scratching her hear and muttering to herself, or the lady is some kind of schizophrenic and talking to herself while simply holding her ear...maybe her ear hurts? ![]() |

Although, it's interesting how her fingers are curled as if she is holding something and there is no sort of movement in her hand (that I can see) that would suggest scratching. ![]() |

It's tempting to call it a time-traveler, but that's looking at it from our viewpoint of the 21st century. Try thinking in terms of a resident of 1928, and then ask the question: "What is this woman doing with her left hand?" The most obvious one is that she knows she is on camera, and is preventing the camera from getting a good picture of her. She probably did not want to be seen on that street for the simple reason that she wasn't supposed to be there. Note also that her hat is jammed down on top of her head, masking her silhouette from the camera, again, preventing clear identification. ![]() |

This is very strange, but could have many reasons behind it. In the early part of this century they had many remedies for toothaches, and to be pressing a compress with herbs in it against her/his cheek would be reasonable. But the talking is very odd indeed. In that time period, it would have attracted attention to just be walking down a street 'alone' and talking to ones self. The person seems well dressed for the era, so they don't appear to be loony-toons or belong in an asylum. If they are a time traveler, using a cell phone or talking devise would be done in private ... rather than in daylight on a public street. ![]() |

We talked about this in the comments of one of my posts about strange archeology finds. Time travel may be possible with some of the items that have been found in places they should not have been but I'm not sure on this one. I've seen the video because I love Charlie Chaplin films but like I said I have no idea what this person is doing and why it looks like she's talking to someone. Maybe her jaw hurts and is applying pressure to the pain and moving her mouth... ![]() |

Below is a cut-and-paste from the movie Millennium, starring Kris Kristofferson and Cheryl Ladd. The movie is pretty cheesy, but it is interesting. The movie was taken from a book by the same name, written by novelist John Varley. Below is one of the best serie which I have reproduced below. [The speaker is a physicist, Dr. Arnold Mayer, played by Daniel J. Travanti. This is probably the most commonsense, logical approach to the subject of time-travel that I have ever heard.] "It's a far cry from saying that objects can travel through time to saying that people can. Why? For one thing, paradoxes can occur. Say you build a time machine, go backwards in time and murder your father when he was ten years old. That means you were never born. And if you were never born, how did you build the time machine? Paradox! It's the possibility of wiping out your own existence that makes most people rule out time-travel. Still, why not? If you were careful, you could do it. A time-traveler would have to be extremely cautious, but he could do a surprising number of things. He could observe, for one. Time-travelers would know the answers to a thousand questions that have puzzled historians for generations. For example: who was on the grassy knoll that day in Dallas? He could also take things, provided they wouldn't be missed: a cup of water from the Pacific Ocean, a stone from the Grand Canyon... This may sound pointless, but sometimes the difference between a dead man and a man who's alive can be very small. Now, how about the difference between a man who's about to die, and a man no one will ever see again? You see, this is the difficult thing about looking for time-travelers: they don't want to be found! You must look for them in places where people do not normally go. Or, where there are people that no one will ever see again!" ![]() |

I expanded the movie and played it extra slow. The person has on a glove which make the hand appear large but you can see the skinny wrist below the glove. The heavy coat, raised collar, gloves and high socks make me believe the person is sensitve to sun light which is shining in her direction directly on to her face if her hand weren't there to block it. Possibly her ears are more sensitive to the light than her face. However, even so, try to put your hand over your face like she is doing, it is hard see why she would align her arm, hand and fingers in that way to block the sunlight. It is an interesting question. If that person were using a cell phone, and had the ability to talk to someone else who would they be talking to? If there were an answer to the cell towers and it was that they were somehow advanced then they would be using ear plug communications not a visible cell phone in public, and while being filmed. If there were radios back then, which I doubt they required vaccume tubes and those were quite large. Look for a string coming from the bottom of a can.. That is probably the only audible long distance communications that was possible besides yelling. lol -Rad. |

I see it like this. the people making this movie probably knew that at some point along history's timeline somebody would invent mobile phones. So they put the lady in for a joke. If you look at say Back to the Future II and the hoverboards as an example of the predictive imagination of the writers. dan ![]() |

I blew up the picture even more and was able to figure out what she is saying. She said "Don't forget to pick up the kids after space dock training" or "What time do you close tonight I have to get my nails done" or "Get Someone to clean up this mess, they caught me on cameria again" or "Hello? Hello? can you hear me? Sheesh another dropped call!" or "Wow, in this time period, I'm dressed up as a woman, I hope nobody is filming this".. Or something like that.. I'm not sure.. I only got one word and it started with a letter. -Rad.. |

Perhaps she (or he) didn't want to be noticed in the film in that get-up so he (or she) is hiding the face nonchalantly, trying to make it look a little natural, like the hand is holding something. As for talking, the person could be talking to someone off screen. We don't know how loud the voice was. ![]() |

I saw this on the news yesterday. It is certainly strange. I don't think it's a cell phone though. It appeared to me that she was talking to the man in front of her while holding something up to her ear. Perhaps she had an earache. Or it could have been an older version of a hearing aid as previously mentioned. ![]() |

Rad & Kelly: There is a computer program that can readd lips in a variety of languages, and supply voices. The program has been used on Hitler's home movies, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtlB3dk8FE4 Maybe this program could supply voices to what she was really saying. ![]() |
