THE TRUE STORY OF "THE EXORCIST" MAY BE A HOAX!!!

  Author:  19901  Category:(Horror) Created:(6/17/2003 11:45:00 PM)

You may have already been aware that the movie, "The Exorcist" was based on a true story. You may have also seen the documentary on The History Channel that professes to have the true story. But according to one man, Mark Opsasnick, the true story is quite a bit different. To those who are interested it is a very good article and offers another view. It's quite long, but you can bookmark it and read it later. Was the story a hoax? You may think so after you read it. Let me know if it changes your mind. Oh, one thing, though: Even if it is untrue, "The Exorcist" scared me more than any other movie.

Date: 6/18/2003 12:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 44793    Hoax or not, I still liked the movie "Possessed" with Timothy Dalton, which is supposedly how it happened.. -Taite
Date: 6/18/2003 12:10:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19901    Didn't know that. I'll have to check it out. This guy even posts a high school photograph that is supposed to include the real person, even though he doesn't point them out.
Date: 6/18/2003 12:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    I always knew that it was based on a true story. That is loosely based. I also knew that it was a boy who was possessed. I'm on part 4 (Friends and Neighbors Speak Out — For the First Time) of the URL you posted. So far, I don't see anything that says it was a hoax. It's about the author tracking down the real boy that was possessed. It is very interesting though.
Date: 6/18/2003 12:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    Sorry about the "—". It was supposed to be a dash.
Date: 6/18/2003 12:45:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19901    I didn't think so either, but he'll mention here in a while. It is a good read, though. You're right about that.
Date: 6/18/2003 12:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    Ahhh I'm to that part now LOL. Now I'm seeing where you get "hoax". His childhood friends didn't think too highly of him. Doesn't sound like he was a very nice person does it? I'm on the last part now.
Date: 6/18/2003 1:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    That's the most interesting thing I've read in a long while. Thanks for sharing it. Sounds to me like it probably was a hoax. I guess we'll never really know for sure beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Date: 6/18/2003 1:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 7672    Bookmarked for later reading.
Date: 6/18/2003 2:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    I think it was probably a hoax on the boy's part but I'm sure that some people really believed it even back then. I don't think the priests' would fake something like that, but you never know.
Date: 6/18/2003 5:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 47113    what an amazing article...i have to admit, that was the most scariest movie i ever seen...nothing topped it yet as far as i'm concerned
Date: 6/18/2003 6:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    whether the exorcist story was true or not (the one behind it i mean) there have been enough exorcisms documented, strange happenings during them documented - strange STRANGE things , witnessed...that i believe some of them are real. so whether you can disprove the one that inspired the exorcist matters not really, when you look at the big picture - if there has been even one, that was real - then you should be scared *-)
Date: 6/18/2003 7:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Good article, thanks for posting.
Date: 6/18/2003 8:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 62141    I saw the movie in the theater when it first came out. Scared me to death. I still won't watch scarey movies.
Date: 6/18/2003 8:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 62141    Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
Date: 6/18/2003 8:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19901    Heather, I agree. I think the movie brought the whole exorcism concept to the mainstream American public. I know that before the movie, I had never even heard of such a thing. Despite my angst, I had to learn more.
Date: 6/18/2003 8:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    i remember seeing only the scene where her throat is swelled out and head spinning, at about age 5-6, and they wouldn't let me watch any more, i had nightmares from then on, and didn't watch it until i was a teen - i asked my grandmother if that kind of thing really happened, and she said yes....BAD thing to tell a kid that young...that's not why i believe some of them happen though - it's been documented and witnessed too many times, speaking in ancient languages with different voices, scratches and marks appearing and words appearing on skin then disappearing..it has all happpened, and been witnessed - enough times that at least one of them must have happened.
Date: 6/18/2003 9:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 55967    "What life?" lol. Sounded funny.
Date: 6/18/2003 10:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 49536    Good article. Thanx for the post! Lil Kat
Date: 6/18/2003 12:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    WOW! Whew. I just read the first 4 parts, and the truth behind it all is VERY INTRIGUING! Yes it is long, but the first three parts can almost be skimmed over since it is about the journey of the guy writing the piece, and how Mt. Rainer was the legend. But part 4, man! This stuff is interesting. It doesn't seem it was COMPLETELY a hoax, but...part 5 is in a little while...
Date: 6/18/2003 3:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Well now. Just finished part 5. Excellent story! The guy did a lot of work uncovering what he did. I would not really call the story a "hoax," since something indeed was amiss and wrong with the boy, although it probably was not demon possession. I'm glad we've gotten the facts now and not waited for more decades, since the truth would have been lost or near impossible to uncover---as it is in too many history stories like Billy the Kid, Robin Hood, etc.
Date: 6/21/2003 11:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 60162    This could really help me with a feature I want to write for another site i do work for. Thank you, i will bookmark and read for it. I read the book before i saw the movie, it was one scary book.
Date: 6/22/2003 7:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 15093    movies like this are so scary because they is not your life it's after but your very sole there are alot of stories exorcists but it's hard for me to say whitch are real and not the numbers have droped more and more over the years but that could be the way people live today why would satin take what he already has it seems the more we move ahead in time the less we have to do with god
Date: 6/24/2003 1:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 43732    Everyone i know believes it's true. I don't think it's a hoax cause you never know it possible that it's true. I didn't think the movie was all that great lol. Evil~Goddess*
Date: 6/24/2003 10:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19901    Evil, it was REALLY scary when it came out in 1973. I'm not sure if that was the right year, but around in there.
Date: 6/26/2003 6:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 29262    I will read it...
Date: 6/26/2003 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 13589    i will read it alter.. but to me the exorcist was hilarious. maybe i'm just a lil weird though.. hehe
Date: 6/26/2003 9:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 13589    later*
Date: 6/26/2003 4:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Ashley, was that a subconscious slip there? Maybe you really wanted to say you'll "read it on the alter." hehe. j/k
Date: 7/8/2003 7:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 43653    I saw a special on the Exorcist w/ a pyscologist who was trying to debunk it and a priest who witnessed it. Very interesting either the priest was a liar or his accounts were true. The psycologist kept trying to come up w/ logical explanations but when the priest recalled his account it shot down the psycologists theories. I guess we will never know.
Date: 7/23/2003 2:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 49322    I will have to read that thanks for the post.. Explozion2004
Date: 7/23/2003 4:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 49322    Wow, I just got finished reading the story, it is amazing, I am just troubled by why they won't tell the name. I am going to do some research myself to see if I can figure it out.. thanks for the post it was great! Explozion2004
