Conformation of Religious Beliefs~~~~TarHeelGirl

This is a topic of discussion, not debate...so I politely ask all of you to keep it that way.

I recently came across a debate between two people, one of which is a student of Philosophy. He made a comment that I found very interesting. Although it is a simple concept, I honestly had never thought of it before.

"despite the fact that in the last two thousand years of philosophy, men and women [...] have been both unable to soundly and evidently either confirm the tenets of theism or deny them..." (I had to edit because it was directed at someone in particular.)

With that argument in mind: Knowing that you can't comfirm the existence or non-existence of God, what is it that confirms YOUR beliefs for YOU? Now, I know that Christianity is based on faith, but each Christian has something that makes them believe, something gives them reason to have faith. This discussion is also for non-Christians... Atheists, Muslums, Wiccans, ect...

Date: 5/8/2003 2:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    Just a feeling I have, I know that when I stray away from my beliefs, I start to feel empty and hollow and life seems to get imbalanced.
Date: 5/8/2003 2:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 53013    For me, it would be the question on where did the earth come from? Who created it and humans? On top of that it would be just faith.
Date: 5/8/2003 2:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 23610    It's funny you posted this, TarHeel Girl, because I was just thinking about something like this myself. I was asking myself how I know that what I believe to be true is not really just some "wishful" thinking on my part....and it kind of scared me for a minute. LOL. I dont' know everything but a few things I can be sure of and that has come to me through actually being fortunate enough to have had a couple "visitations" where an "angel" or whatever one whats to call it....came to talk to me about life and about what is and what is not important here and a little bit about what will happen after this life. I have also had my grandmother, who died, come and visit me to let me know that she is alright and she is happy where she is. It's these kinds of things that add, for me, a more solid belief rather than just a "faith" based belief in some of the truths. I don't know everything....but I know just enough to know that this life is not all there is and that despite what we may be taught....all it boils down to in the end is love and the way we treat one another....the rest is filler. I sometimes wonder if I wasn't lucky to be able to be told these things in a way where I would be able to really know it....instead of just hope for it....because I am such a literal person and need something more solid before I just believe what I am told merely because it is handed down over time. But....either way....I am so glad to have these experiences for those times when I get a little down and wonder what it all is for and if this life really means anything at all.
Date: 5/8/2003 3:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    My beliefs came about over a long time, and much studying of other religions, their origins and HISTORY. After all this, I concluded that NONE were for me; none made any sense; and thus, none gave me any valid reasons TO believe. NO ONE can honsestly say their is or isn't a god; as we do not know if there is a supreme entity. However, I know for certain there is no such thing as the god of the Bible; the Christ god.
Date: 5/8/2003 4:11:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess I should answer my own question also. :-) I grew up in a Southern Baptist Church, and because of the contridictions I saw there I questioned the existence of God, or any god. But as a artist, I looked around at nature, at the beautiful colors and patterns on birds, flowers, trees, ect, and could not accept that someone/something, didn't have a hand in creating that. I believe something is there and a big part of me wants to say it is the Christian God, but I have trouble following many of the beliefs that Christians have, mainly because, through my association with many who have studied Theology and have translated portions of the bible, I have learned that many Christian beliefs are based on mistranslations.
Date: 5/8/2003 4:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    Leave it to Thinker to once again denounce only the "Christian God". However, I know for certian that the God of the Bible, the Christian God, is the only God...
Date: 5/8/2003 5:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Awwww, KC. So sorry I didn't list all the thousands of gods that I consider myths as well; but then most people wouldn't read such a long list; nor would they care. Besides, the Christian god IS the only one most people in this country (and on USM) know of; so why bother with listing that which no one will read or care about anyway? I could make a whole HUGE list just for you if you'd like. Make sense now?
Date: 5/8/2003 5:55:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53689    Hey! You two, I said no debate....:P KC, what I asked was what is it for you that confirms that belief for you?
Date: 5/8/2003 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 19092    You would do that just for me???? I feel special....
