Katie Bryant lied awake that night, her mind completely focused on Stanleigh Kretsch. She thought of herself as a monster; she hadn't stayed with him, even though her gut told her to do so. She could hardly wait for Monday to come, when she would see him again. There was something about Bailey Kretsch that made her think he'd probably done something to the young man.
Nightmares haunted her sleep. She found herself standing on a dock, looking down at the murky, churning waters of a lake. Rain splattered down on her bare arms and face as she stood dumbly on the rickety pier. There was a strange buzzing sound that filled the air, reminding her of a thousand killer bees. Trying to distinguish the sound, she glanced around at her surroundings quickly, frightened.
"Hey Katie!" She heard a yell from behind her.
She whirled around quickly to see Stanleigh standing on the dock, grinning brightly. Instead of wearing all black, he was dressed in all white, appearing angelic. He gestured for her to come to him, his smile wide and inviting. "Come here, Katie."
"I'm coming," she managed to choke out.
She tried running towards him, but it seemed as if she never came closer to him. The dock grew longer, Stanleigh further away from her. He was calling to her, his cries starting to grow worried, pained, and full of distress. "Katie! Katie! Come here! I need you!" he called.
She couldn't reach him, no matter how quickly she ran. A painful cramp seared her side, thus keeping her from reaching him. She had to stop running to clutch her stomach, cringing in pain. Her teeth were gritted so tightly that her jaw ached. When she was finally able to take a good look at Stanleigh, she was horrified at what she saw. Instead of his sweet, handsome face, she saw instead a skeleton's face. A skull wearing his raven black hair. His hands turned to bones.
And she screamed. Loudly. Wildly. He had needed her, waited for her to reach him, and, in doing so, died on that dock. A skeleton took the place of him, frightening her to death. It's jaw moved as it laughed at her. Jeering her for not reaching him in time. And she screamed even more.
Awakening from the nightmare, Katie jumped forward in bed like the people did in those stereotypical movies. Sweat dampened the strands of her hair, causing them to stick to her forehead. She brushed them to the side, trying to catch her breath after the awful nightmare. Afraid that Stanleigh might actually be dead, she knew she had to see him before the next day dawned.
