Local Man killed by wild animals
Tuesday, September 17,
Three Edmonton men had there peaceful fall outing cut short after an unprovoked wolf attack. Jeremy Roberts, Paul Watson and Curtis Berreti left there suburban homes in Sherwood Park on September 14th for what was planned to be a week of sport. They had been warned of wolves in the area, and took extra precautions to store their supplies and fresh game.
The attack came at approximately 10:30 am, according to Watson. They had stopped fora rest when they were descended upon by 6 large wolves, one of which bit Roberts in passing. "They vanished as quickly as they appeared." Watson said in his statement. Berreti was too shaken to speak.
"We tried to get out of the area, but Jeremy was injured bad, and we couldn’t move fast enough." According to the two survivors a lone wolf returned, leaping out and mauling the victim, who died almost instantly. The wolf fled when fired upon, but escaped. Watson and Berreti carried Roberts out on a make-shift stretcher without further incident.
A province-wide warning has been issued as hunters flock to the area, intent on destroying the man-killer. There is fear of further confrontations as wolves are fiercely territorial and will protect their dens viciously if necessary. Some advocates speculate that this is the real reason behind the attack.
Conservation officers in the region worry of the overzealous reaction to this tragedy. They warn that there is no way to identify the offending animal and that unchecked killing could lead to a serious ecological imbalance.
