"Positive Atheism" is the title of a book written by Gora,(Shri Goparaju Ramachandra Rao), (1902-1975), who was a good friend of Ghandi, and lived with him at one time. He wrote books, gave lectures and was ask about his friendship with Ghandi, since Ghandi believed in God. He wrote a long explanation and basically said that one would clearly understand if they knew that Ghandi believed that God is Truth-Truth is God. I'd be happy to give you the link to read of this, if you wish. At first, I wanted to ask why that stuck you as "funny" but I understand, as it just simply being something you just don't understand, which is often a normal reaction. |

this is a nice quote. I myself am not an atheist, but I respect you, Catherine, and I understand your right to believe as you will. My boyfriend of two years (well, now we are "just friends" is an atheist. He is the most moral, kind, and level-headed man I know. Now, he knows about my Wiccan/Witch faith. He doesn't share my beliefs, but he never belittles me, and shows respect when I feel an urge to talk about it. In return, I have asked him why he believes what he does, and his responses, while I think differently, are so honest & intelligent. Thank you for sharing. |

Good morning Thinker, I guess it's just that the thought of no God, no afterlife, no spiritual realm, in this largely infinite universe of ours, with an infinite timebase, and to think we are only going to get maybe, at best, 80 years...stuck on this single rock, just struck me as funny. But now, as I think about it, it's really sad... |

It may be sad to you, KC, but I cherish and relish in LIFE; the HERE and NOW; TODAY; each precious moment.....LIFE is all I will ever know, and I don't dwell on a mystical, mythical "heavenly bliss" of sorts. While that may be of great solace to many, I simply gave up fairy tales of the "happy ever after" kind. I do not think of it, at all, as being "stuck" on this "rock". Contrary to what you might think, my life isn't this huge dreary existence, void of any spirituality, love, peace and happiness. Here's a poem for you: "I want to lie still in the wake of the moon....How it glows and shines...I want to be able to watch it, till the end of Earth's time......How many things I like to do....But to pass the time away. Nothing do I find more soothing than just to gaze up there...I want to stand in the rain....Get soaked to the bone.....Feel how it is to have no restraint. Wait there; sit there---breathe in the dark night.......Watch the stsrs come and go. Laugh at the dead and remember The questioners of many times........Tell the people things they would never dream For it is against their way........Would you like to lay with me and push the bounds away?". I prefer to look at LIFE with a humanistic and scientific mind. I prefer the human approach to HUMAN problems; self reliant, free, and a roll-up-yer-sleeves, take responsibility for and finding solutions in fighting injustice, poverty, illiteracy and ignorance. Just yesterday, I was talking to Firstborn on the telephone about this. I told her of how many of my mother's Christian friends gather at her house for prayers and gospel singing or "laying on of hands", etc.. I told her that I noticed... that when these people were done, through with everything and had sashayed out the door; I wondered WHY none of those ever cooked a meal for mom, never did her laundry, bought or brought her a sack of groceries, never offered to help an old lady with such a simple thing as taking a bath, or drive her to pay a bill....anything of this nature? IF I see a hungry child, or a family in need, or anyone who is in NEED; I won't simply say "I'll pray for you" and be on my way. NO, I WILL do SOMETHING, here and now, to alleviate their pain; and to make them feel better and happy.....NOW...TODAY, in THIS life. |

Drkptrs, the quote was in response to a theist who, without bothering to understand even after given careful explanation (of Positive Atheism Magazine) had said: "Though I can't say that I wish your endeavors well, since you embrace a world-view that is diametrically opposed to mine, I will say I wish you well in life." |
