The Work Blues

For a while now a year I have been unhappy with my current job. There are days I feel like just getting up and quitting. But then I realize I need the money and don’t really wanna go through having to look, apply, going for a interview and waiting to see if the place will hire me. I guess you can say that really why I haven’t left my job. In case you wanted to know I work as a cashier at a Walmart and been at this job since 2017.

I guess you can say another reason is the way the store is ran. Walmart makes all these changes and rules on Monday and by Tuesday afternoon there are new rules or they change the ones they just made. Like now some stores have almost everything locked up. From body wash to pills to men pants to even calculators.

The company claimed its suppose to help stop people from stealing. I think it’s more to anyone people (so far it’s working). Almost everyday we have to hear people complaining. Complaining because they can’t get what they want because it’s locked up. I think it’s getting to me like today I was ringing up people and I was thinking to myself what am I doing here? Do I really need this job to put up with so much.

I keep telling myself to hang in there but I honestly don’t think I will last another year. I think before the year is up I might just end up leaving. Doing something so they fire me or just quitting on my own. I will admit when I first started I liked my job it was something knew and I liked meeting new people. Now I really could care less about this job and some of the people I work with. However there will be some people I will miss if I ever was to leave.

I don’t know I guess I will decide what I will do after my 2 year anniversary in March. Just wanted to get this off my chest.

They don't lock up everything here, but I went to several stores down in Phoenix, and I was shocked at how many things were locked away. Sad state of things

Not being happy with your work will definitly take it's toll on your life in ways you probably don't even realize.

I will share this with you though - a small but of perspective. Although your job has politics, and things that bother you, you will find over time that nearly every work place has the same sort of pitfalls and frustration. My workplace is riddled with job politics. The big question you have to ask yourself (and maybe you already have) is can you manage the concerns Or is it too much?

I hope it works out, just try to keep perspective. I know it's easier said than done.

Date: 1/24/2019 7:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    Luckily, there are a lot of stores looking for cashiers. I would say if you're that unhappy, to start applying at other stores. Sometimes all it takes is just a change of environment.
Date: 1/28/2019 9:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 5940    I too agree with Sundin, and over the years I've learn to surround myself with positive people and things, as well as navigating myself out of problem situations that don't concern me. Remember what Good ol' Mr. Rogers used to say at the at the end of each show? Go out there and make it a great day by just being YOU. And now I will retire to my lounge chair....

Date: 2/2/2019 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 45397    Redeye007...give this a try BEFORE you walk in the door to start your shift ...say to yourself " I AM going to have a GOOD day, no matter what happens"... It works, even if you are having a bad/off day, it doesn't seem as bad as it would have if you went in with a " I don't want to be here", "It's going to be a very long day" etc. type mentality. Try it for a few days and see the difference it makes.
Date: 3/3/2019 4:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 54952    @Redeye007: I work at Wal*Mart as well, for about twelve years now. I've seen good and bad changes at the company throughout my time, dealt with good customers and bad, same as coworkers. Wal*Mart as a business can be pretty chaotic at times, but that's a part of the business world. Even though we may not always like it, sometimes they change things so fast because they're trying to stay on top of the market, trends, etc.

If they were to let up at anyone time, there would be plenty of other businesses that will swoop in and take in their share of the market. The business world will always be cut-throat like that and will in turn force most every business to make erratic changes here and there in policies, etc. Try to see it from the viewpoint that they are trying to make sure you still have a job. True, their goal is maintaining profits, but that also requires people to man the stores they operate-and that's us. As far as customers becoming upset over locked merchandise, try not to let it get to you. I know its sometimes easier said than done, but just try.

Often they're not necessarily upset at you, they're just upset over the situation and just venting. Or it could be they are normally reasonable folks, but that this situation is the last straw for them at that time. It's hard to say. Just remain solemn, humble, and apologetic as much as you can in such situations, and try to use calm, level tones. It will help to deescalate such situations.

To go along with that, when I say to be apologetic, I'm not saying to accept blame for their situation, just do it to show them you understand their dissatisfaction and you are sympathetic to their issue and trying to address the situation as best you can. Sometimes, they'll calm down and appreciate the fact you at least tried to help them when others might've just brushed them off. If they're set on complaining, just let them speak. Sometimes people just straight up want to be heard. If you look at it that way, it makes it easier to deal with customers when they're getting upset.

I'd personally say try to avoid burning any bridges at work by trying to get fired. As you said yourself, you need the money and Wal*Mart is a fairly steady paycheck. A popular saying is, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. You might be stressed about Wal*Mart now, but if you were to get another job, who is to say it will or won't turn out worse.

As far as bad coworkers, just don't engage or indulge them. Stick by the ones you can count on. At my old store there was a couple times or so another associate told me to kill myself. A real unpleasant fellow, to put it mildly. And this happened after one of my friends had actually taken their own life back in 2014. He was often rude and complained about all sorts of things, never seemed to be happy about anything at work. I probably should've spoke to management about what he said to me those few times, but I just wrote him off as a miserable old man and went on with my job. I refused to let him drag me down and ruin my day. There was also plenty of other associates who just liked to gossip about everything under the sun, I tried and continue to try and avoid it as much as possible. Every day at the end of my shift I would go through the front door and as soon as I heard the doors swish shut behind me, I left work and the day's events behind. That's the best thing one can do at any job blue or white collar. It is good to vent sometimes, just don't dwell on it too much and let yourself make a rash decision.

At my current store, there's an associate I'll call "Marv". Marv could be grouchy at times and tended to use me as a sounding board for his current woes, work or otherwise. I'm guessing maybe since I'm quiet, he felt comfortable venting to me and assumed I was safe to talk to. So I let him vent. Yes, at times it was draining, especially when there was work to be done, but despite that, I listened to what he had to say and would try to offer him advice on dealing with whatever was upsetting him. Lately, I've noticed he smiles when he sees me and says "Hello", or "Hey buddy". Marv's spirits seemed to have improved quite a bit in the past month or so. It genuinely makes me happy that I've had some kind of positive effect on someone, as dorky as it may sound. It ties in with what I was talking about dealing with upset customers, sometimes people just want to be heard.

You mentioned you were a cashier, perhaps rather than changing an entire company/employer, why not try switching departments within Wal*Mart? You also mentioned at your store how certain items such as clothing, etc. are locked up and customers are frustrated. Maybe consider trying to get a position near one of those areas and try to help out the customers as much as you can. Push to get a radio from management, even if you aren't a department manager, etc. Mention the issue that you see and they might figure out a way to get equipment to you. If they can't, see if you can split using one with another associate that does have one. Make note of which associates do have equipment such as radios, and try to build up a rapport with them, if you don't already. Take whatever steps you can to improve communication within your store.

Consider taking the supervisor test, and the next time a dept. manager position opens up go for it. You can see various issues with your store, instead of letting it get to you, try to ask yourself what you can bring to the table so to speak to improve things, morale even. It might inspire others to thing along similar lines. People take notice.

The best thing I do in a work day, regardless if an interaction with a customer is good or bad, I always tell them my name and offer myself as a resource for getting assistance *anywhere* in the store. If they're dissatisfied with something, I remind them about e-mailing the company through website, or offer to get a manager. Try to offer whatever solutions are within your power to give. I've walked customers clear across the store to find things, even when I had mods going on. Customers notice things too. And talk. If you manage to remain upbeat and helpful even when you're not necessarily feeling like that, it tends to rub off on customers as well as coworkers. The ones that are always unpleasant about everything will come and go and move on, but the more reasonable folks will stick around.

Oops! I didn't intend to write a novel or come across as preachy, but since you're a fellow associate I just wanted to share some words of encouragement. I hear you on the frustrations of daily business, but just take it one day at a time. Do what you can in your allotted shift, and then leave work at work as much as humanely possible. After all, we're only human. Take care, ::Cabbage::
