Forstyne is correct in that--according to Carroll--there is no official answer. However, according to the late great Marting Gardner--author of a wonderful book titled 'The Annotated Alice'--a number of solutions have been offered. They are: 1. Because Poe wrote on both! 2. Because they both produce notes that are very flat. 3. Bills and tales are among their characteristics. 4. Because the notes for which they are noted are not musical notes. 5. Because it slopes with a flap.  |
