UNDATED—A loud noise was heard shortly before 3 a.m. Friday morning in Aiken, Richmond and Columbia counties.

Local law enforcement agencies also report hearing the boom, but no one knows what caused it.

Chris Turner, and Aiken County resident, told WJBF News Channel 6’s Sheena Bodie what he saw and heard, in a phone interview. We have also been informed that two Aiken County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly saw a fireball in the sky.

According to the Director of the DuPont Planetarium at USC-Aiken, Gary Senn, the cause of the boom could have possibly been a meteor. Stay tuned to WJBF Newschannel 6 and WJBF.com for more on this developing story.

Let us know below by leaving a comment to let us know what you saw or heard. You can also report meteor/fireball sightings to the American Meteor Society’s website.

If you happened to capture a photo, video, or cellphone video, please email [email protected] .

Date: 3/23/2009 12:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    reminds me of the Dan Akroyd case in which a fireball with blue lighted type UFO was seen over northern New York and people were waken to come out and see it..
You probably did hear whatever it was that streaked through the sky, incredible.Very Interesting.

Date: 3/23/2009 9:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    You would think they would have been more watchful for anything in our atmosphere, because we just sent up a Space Shuttle about a week ago, from Florida's other coast. You would think if there were any meteors, (or Space junk) they would have waited till after they passed. I mean, I understand the Shuttle is already safely docked in Space, but still....ah, well. I haven't had coffee yet.

Date: 3/23/2009 9:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    This has been happening a lot lately. And the media isnt make a big deal out of it either, which makes me even more curious.

Date: 3/31/2009 10:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    i don't really think it's related' however with you and poosey both hearing it'm it makes my crazed imagination think that roar may be indicating something to do with the beast rising from bondage...or the antichrist preparing to make himself known or the earth groaning and warning of a shift about to take place...if i were you, i'd see if others are also hearing this. as for the fire in the sky...go to ufo casebook...they report new sightings and post videos and pictures almost every day...something big is going on...love to you!
Date: 1/24/2010 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 63962    From everything it sounds like it seems to have been a meteorite. They come down often over different parts of the world and this pretty much fits the same description. I know I'm almost a year late, but that is my two cents. LOL
