Date: 3/20/2001 11:46:00 AM From Authorid: 18103 I have to agree with you, so many addictions can really ruin lives for not only the people with the addictions, but those around them. Your list of addictions covered the ones I would have listed myself. |
Date: 3/20/2001 11:57:00 AM From Authorid: 25183 Addictions definately can ruin a life. I was a smoker for 8 years. I did quit for the time of my pregnancy and during breast feeding. I also never smoked inside my house as to subject my child to smoke inhalation. I finally quit when my daughter turned two. My turning point was when my daughter took my cigarettes off the table and pretended to smoke them. She had seen me through the sliding glass door and wanted to be like mommy. It was really hard to do, and I quit cold turkey on July 31, 2000. I feel so much better. My life wasn't ruined by this, but it could have been in the future, ie. lung cancer, heart disease. You are very courageous!!! I wonder which one is the hardest though??? Is there any way to really know??? I'm just curious... |
Date: 3/20/2001 12:08:00 PM From Authorid: 16442 If you think about it though, anything can become an addiction, watching t.v., the internet, shopping, etc. Its about self-control and who has it and who doesn't, IMO. Any type of addiction can be negative, we must exercise self-control over all things in our lives. I don't think any one is better or worse, its all about the addict and not about the addiction. : ) |
Date: 3/20/2001 12:08:00 PM From Authorid: 12600 About a month ago, I had to take my father to the er because he fell on a cement porch and busted his head. He was so drunk that he was unable to walk. I had to practically carry this 51 year old man into the er. When the dr was looking at him, daddy was just cussing and fighting this man, and I was in tears begging him to be stop. And I am almost thirty and it still tears me up to see him doing this. My dad is 51, unemployed, and living with his parents. I watched him beat my mom til she bled, beat his own parents, and remember nights of having to flee with my mom and sister into the dark just to find a tree or something to hide behind to keep him from hurting us. Yes, addiction ruins lives. Not just the lives of those doing it but everyone unfortunate enough to be dragged into their hell. |
Date: 3/20/2001 12:11:00 PM From Authorid: 15895 I have a vendetta against cocaine right at the moment. So far it haslmost screwed me up, taken a relationship I cherish, changed my good friend, got me in trouble with my parents, and broke a good friend. The relationship is the hardest to accept, because he wants off, but it won't let go. I can't conquer it, and he won't. That is the most terrible thing to me, only because it is so close to home. But the rest are awful as well. |

Date: 3/20/2001 12:24:00 PM From Authorid: 18104 It's only my opinion but the lack of faith in a higher power, (whom I choose to call God), than yourself leads to all addictions. It is also my opinion that a drug is a drug is a drug, whether it be alcohol, nicotine, marijuan, sex, and so forth...they are all capable of destroying ones life. Great Question. |

Date: 3/20/2001 12:30:00 PM From Authorid: 21897 This is tough one. I don't really know what addiction would be the worst.....I mean, any addiction/stronghold/whatever that caused you to care less about yourself and more about your addiction would be bad, right? It'd be hard to measure.......it kinda depends on the person. -Starfly* |
Date: 3/20/2001 12:31:00 PM From Authorid: 23207 I don't know what I would consider worse. My husband smokes, both cigarettes and marijuana. He also drinks. I don't do any of those things and never have. I have seen him do harder drugs. And I agree that it seems that the lesser drugs leads to the harder stuff. They are all bad for you in some way. My husbands dad died at 48 due to a heart attack, alcohol related. My father died at 52 from lung cancer. So to me both things, are just as bad. Trouble |
Date: 3/20/2001 12:38:00 PM From Authorid: 7654 Hi Pam,I think it may all depend on the persons system.I have seen alittle of all of it from the work I use to do.I have seen people come totaly unraveled trying to give up cigarettes, and then others have no problems. As for hard drugs an addiction to this is so very hard to beat.I have seen people claw the walls till their nails were bleeding.Detox from alcohol,is a living h***,the shakes, the anger, the thirst for that one thing that will make it all better. It's all sad...These just happen to be the self hurt addictions.Sure we all have our little everyday addections, such as our computers and T.V.'s,sports ect.But as of yet these have not become a life threatening addection.Once you think about it, there had to be a reason for starting the addections, was it to look grown? To do as your buddies or co workers did so that you would not feel left out?Or maybe you were just so unhappy that you could not stand to be in touch with reality?...Great post Pam, makes one really think as to why addections even happen.... |
Date: 3/20/2001 1:00:00 PM From Authorid: 22852 I think they are all bad.. I for one smoke and I hate it yet every time I try to quit I crave even more. I feel for anyone who is addicted to anything. Stormchaser |
Date: 3/20/2001 1:33:00 PM From Authorid: 23610 Interesting post. Hmmmm...well, let me go out side and have a cigarette and think about it. I'll get back to ya. *wink* -Lady Nyx |
Date: 3/20/2001 1:37:00 PM From Authorid: 11091 I feel the worst addiction is dependency. I am a co-dependent and have gone through horrors just so I would never be alone. I know a family who spends all their money at the casino and doesn't save monry to buy food. I feel any addiction that changes your life is horrible. |
Date: 3/20/2001 2:20:00 PM From Authorid: 16612 I don't think I can say much more than what has already been said.Addiction ruins ppl and messes up every aspect of a person's life. |

I agree with you guys that any addiction is bad if it becomes an addiction. I might seem nieve because I haven't smoked, drank, or done drugs but I have SURE seen enough of it in my lifetime. I have seen my brother struggle with an addiction to Heroine until he lost his precious wife and children, have to sleep in his car, and who knows what else. I have seen a friend bet her own sons LIFE on the fact that she was clean and would never return to drugs. Now her son lays dying in a Texas hospital. I've seen other friends change from a responsible, happy, caring, person into a horrible person I swore I never knew because of drugs. My best friend who I have known since 7th. grade smokes and at times I think it has taken some money from her children because of the addictions, but it has never been to the EXTREME that I've seen drugs take someone. I tend to believe drugs are the worst but they are all bad... I guess my weakness would be food. I have my comfort foods that I should not eat. I make excuses for it but I know better... |
Date: 3/20/2001 5:31:00 PM From Authorid: 27118 I think being addicted to hard drugs and gambling is way worse than cigarettes. I think this because for the most part cigarettes take a while to destroy, the body or the quality of life. But drugs don't take long at all. The addiction to cigarettes usually won't make you steal, lie, cheat, prostitute yourself, etc, but drugs will, gambling will. I myself have many people close to me that have major drug problems. Marijuana is only considered a first step for drug users because some people that are willing to smoke weed most likely will try other drugs too. Not because the weed made them try other drugs. I smoke weed and have no desire to try other drugs, and never have. It is a myth for most people who smoke weed. SPEEDRACER |
Date: 3/20/2001 5:52:00 PM From Authorid: 9295 I'm not a smoker, never have been. It's a habit I could never stand. But, I am curious about what it's like to be addicted to cigarettes. I've always wondered why it's so hard to quit. I'm not doubting that it is in anyway, I'd just like to know what it compares to. Is it like feeling hungry, tired, anxious, nervous, or what? |

I agree with you speedracer. I think they might be the worst addictions also. The reason I would never even try any of them is because I couldn't guarantee myself that I would not become addicted or would never get out of control. I think that was a good choice on my part. I don't want these things because I have never had them. I also agree with Nova though. It makes me curious how it feels to try to stop smoking. It must be really hard because it made my daughter LITERALLY sick when she did it. She had only smoked for something like 18 months but it was still really hard. I THINK it would be even harder if you had smoked longer... |
Date: 3/20/2001 8:06:00 PM From Authorid: 23610 Okay, Pam, I'm back...and I agree with ya. Anything that can so negatively effect your lifestyle is definitely not a good thing. I actually don't smoke...but I used to....I have a little one now...and I would hate for him to grow up with out me. A lot of times bad habits do affect more than just the person with the habit. -Lady Nyx |

Dear Lady, I knew you were kidding and I thought that was pretty funny. You and Firstborn keep us laughing around here. Yes, I agree we would kind of like for you to be around for a very long time also. I'm glad you were able to quite. For some people it really seems almost impossible. Dear Rane, HORRAY for you and keep that attitude. It's NOT EASY though. You CONSTANTLY have people wanting to get you to do these things, I did. People I worked with actually had a bet on me one time. The girl who made the bet to see if I would, tried EVERYTHING in her power to get me to smoke, do drugs, ect. Well, thank God she lost that bet. Stand up for what you know if right no matter who thinks what or says what about you. Deep down inside, they will respect you. You will be looked at as the STRONG one. Those who don't want to hang around you because you don't do these things probably are just feeling guilty. You will find that in life you don't need a LOT of friends, just a couple of really good ones. |
Date: 3/21/2001 10:53:00 AM From Authorid: 27046 Well I am a smoker so I know the addiction to that. I fail to see where pornography is bad addiction unless its child pornography and if that is a turn on for people then you definately have deeper issues....Azairyia |

Date: 3/21/2001 4:38:00 PM From Authorid: 27118 Yes, Azairyia that is exactly what it feels like. I've never been able to explain it. It's funny how that is how being addicted to cigarettes is, but it still doesn't take us to the extremes like hard drugs do.SPEEDRACER |

Date: 3/23/2001 7:34:00 PM From Authorid: 160 I'm late sorry Pam, this is a good post. I smoked for 15 years from the time I was 12 until I turned 28. I was so sick with a bout of bronchitis that I wanted to die. I couldn't breath and every breath that I did get in was painful, guess what? I kept right on lighting up those smokes. I quit when I wanted to become baptised as it was a requirement and I have never felt better. A few years back and favorite Aunt passed away from lung cancer and it was devestating. She was a heavy smoker all her life until they found the cancer in her lungs then she quit. It was to late. This is a good post and something that needs to be said. Thanks.. |
