Date: 3/19/2001 9:04:00 AM From Authorid: 3538 Umm,well,I have watched the home decorating shows and Chris Lloyd, one of the decorators from a show recommends that we use lighter, more pastel colors in the bedroom. He says that it brightens up the room more and givese it a more airy, spacey feeling.I also hear that the color that you pick for your room affects your mood, too.Colors like yellow are supposed to make you more calm and happy. And you know what?Guess what color my room is?A light yello.LOL.Good Luck on painting your room. |
Date: 3/19/2001 9:18:00 AM From Authorid: 15033 I have seen rooms anywhere from dark blue, to purple, to deep red, to black...I don't remember the mood I felt when I stood in them. I may have gotten tired, or felt overly romantic...dunno. My room is white. I like white. So Pam, I have no suggestion for you at this time...he he!...Love, |

It all depends on the atmosphere, the mood, you wish to create, and what you already have available, in the way of furniture and accessories. Pick a theme, or STYLE that you like, look through some decorator magazines, determine what it is that YOU REALLY LIKE, and the items that you already have, and make a list of the things that you will need to purchase to add to the theme. Check out stores like HOME DEPOT, and ask their decorators to give you some ideas. Without knowing much of your tastes, your likes and dislikes, and or what kind of budget, even, it is hard to advise. If decorating isn't your strongest point, then it is best to stick to softer, lighter colors, in my opinion. The Thinker |
Date: 3/19/2001 9:31:00 AM From Authorid: 20497 I have also heard that it is better to use lighter colors BUT you can put a oak strip all the way around about in the middle of the wall and apply darker wall paper so from the middle down would be wallpaper and from the middle up would be a lighter color that blends with the wallpaper......just a thought.... |
Date: 3/19/2001 9:34:00 AM From Authorid: 24845 I don't think that it would nessacarly(can't spell sorry.) would be a bad idea. I think you could pull it off if you light colored furniture and fabrics in there with it. Sometimes when you paint a room dark, you're looking for comfort but it turns out being dark and dreary looking. You don't want that. Put lightness in there with flowers or something that comforts you. Patterns. Think soft. Only after you've painted. Then the thoughts might come to you that could soften the darkness up alittle. I don't see why you couldn't pull it off. You see men's offices in dark shades. They pull it off. Why not? Think softness and that ought to do it. I took interior design classes and decorated my house. I am in no way in the catagory as an expert but I love to design and decorate. I hope this helps. Angel2001 |
Date: 3/19/2001 9:40:00 AM From Authorid: 6358 Light neutral colors usually work best, that way if you decide to do a color change, it will go with almost everything. Dark colors can make you feel dark and depressed. I would stick with light neutral colors, but that's just my opinion. |
Date: 3/19/2001 9:53:00 AM From Authorid: 8424 The most beautiful room I had ever seen was my cousins bedroom, what she did was paint her room like it was outside. How she painted looked like her roof had been torn off and all she could see were the stars. How she did it was paint the bottom half of the wall a light blue, with edges like the wall had been torn away, (its not that hard, it looks like triangle, do you know what i mean?) and the top was very dark blue with glow in the dark stars on the ceiling! It was awesome, maybe that will give you some idea for your room..... |
Date: 3/19/2001 10:20:00 AM From Authorid: 23610 Yes Pam you can paint your room a dark color. I have seen some very beautiful rooms that were a dark color. One was a kind of burnt maroon color. You can do some rag rolling in a lighter shade to add texture to the wall also so it isn't just dark and flat. Ask at the paint store how to do this...it is really easy....you can also use sponges. I love painting...it think it is so relaxing. Have fun. -Lady Nyx |

Well ALL of you have some good ideas and I thank you for them!!! What if I went with an in between color. Kind of a medium. My bedroom is HUGE!!! I have one of those old farmhouses. I sometimes get bad migraines and once I slept in my son's room, which is black. It has the stars and flourescent paint, ect. I don't like the room for me but it was very comforting to sleep in. It was like being outside. I would never paint MY bedroom black but I had considered something darker. You guys would think I'm nuttier than you already do if you saw how I let my kids decorate their bedrooms. My daughters room is white with total graphiti walls. Everyone she has ever known in her life, for the last 3 or 4 years has signed their name and a message on her wall. Both my boys have black with stars on the ceilings and flourescent paint graphiti. I love seeing those trains with the artwork on the side. I know most people hate it. I also love seeing buildings like that as long as it's a good artist. All of my kids are very artistic so their rooms can't be normal. |
Date: 3/19/2001 10:46:00 AM From Authorid: 30229 I think it is a great idea. Would make it cozier and if you nap during the day time, it would make it seem darker. If YOU like it is the main thing. Be "yourself" and individual with your bedroom and you will always be proud of it. Like your kids, my youngest daughter also has graffiti on her walls, and being an "artist" she draws all sorts of characters on them too. I think it is gorgeous and when she is off and gone it will have many many memories. ***Gail*** |

Date: 3/19/2001 11:27:00 AM From Authorid: 23866 My bedroom is dark forest green and I love it! My furniture stands out on the dark background instead of blending into a neutral mush. Color depends on you. I liked the suggestions about rag rolling, sponging, or walpapering part of the wall for texture. As a rule, cool colors (Blues, greens, and violets.) receede into the backgrond and calm, and warm colors (Reds, yellows and oranges.) stand out more and excite. Dark colors can make a room look smaller and light colors, can make a room arier. Try to bear in mind how much light a room gets before changing the color, or what mood you're trying to convey. Lots of luck! Lady Amalthea |

Date: 3/19/2001 4:06:00 PM From Authorid: 20956 It really depends on the size of your bedroom ~ if it is small i wouldnt recommend it because it will make it look alot smaller. But i guess its a personal opinon. But if you would like a relaxing colour for your room why not try sea green, pale blue or any 'oceany' colour usually creates a peaceful and relaxing atmostphere |

Date: 4/17/2001 12:48:00 PM From Authorid: 160 OH man I'm sorry that I didn't see this sooner. Be careful when you do this because dark colors can be gloomy. Have you given any thought to putting a wallpaper on the bottom half of a wall and painting the top half with a coordinating color for balance? My husband wont let me paint with anything but ivory or beige and for 32 years thats all I have ever had but it's pleasant enough. I would however like to experiment with darker colors. |
