Date: 3/9/2001 10:21:00 PM From Authorid: 1334 In the school district my son is in here in CA, they have emergency code words that the teachers know for different types of emergency. they anonce them over the intercom as soon as they have their own class safe. they have different words for different types of situations. All the Staff knows what the words mean but the parents and students do not hover they do drill for these words like they would a fire drill so that even if the students dont know what is going on they know how to respond to this word because they are drilled on them weekly. When my son askes me I try not to go into detail with him (he is 9 ) but I do tell him whast has happend so he does not hear an exagerated gory story from a young student that heard part of the story. I would rather I be the one to tell him so he has correct information. ... |

Date: 3/9/2001 10:23:00 PM From Authorid: 9676 In my school they did that right after columbine. The principal went through the whole school and talked to each of teh classes about what we should do. I don't know I'm scared about it too. It did scare me but its true, I was already worried. They even Expelled a kid for threats. I think everyone's forgotten about it by now but maybe they have to bring it up again. |

It's sad to say but I almost think these are going to be as common as tornado drills. I would say that this type of emergency would be MUCH more common and more threatening now days than tornado's. |

YES, most definitely. A child should know what to do if he sees anything suspicious, or hears anyone making threats. He should know what to do IF confronted with a life threatening incident. I remember in the Columbine shooting, where a young girl died because she answered YES to a question by the shooter. I would tell my child......IF GIVEN A CHOICE....., regardless of how they REALLY FELT, .........I would tell them to say ANYTHING......IF.....it would SAVE THEIR LIFE! I do not want my child to be a martyr for anything or anyone. I do not want any DEAD Heros. The Thinker |

Well besides talking to them about what to do if this situation occurs, I have a plan with my boys about what to do if there are rumors. I tell them if they hear a rumor of someone having a gun, bomb, knife, whatever, to either call me on a payphone or come home immediately. I have told them I prefer they come home. I have instructed them not to go to anyone. Not the office or the teacher, just come home without permission. They are within walking distance of our house, about 1 1/2 miles. Anyway, I know how things are dealt with at our school and it would possibly be ignored if they reported it or might be investigated too slowly. It's just not good "politics" to admit something like this. The principals we have now are MUCH better about this but I don't want them to take the chance. I figure if they leave, I will call the school when they get home. What can they say, RIGHT??? Anyway, I also want to say that I pray for my kids every day. I suggest this for EVERYONE... |
Date: 3/10/2001 6:54:00 AM From Authorid: 22852 Great Post. We have a plan at our school. The other day someone pulled the alarm and we went into action. (lucky it was just a kindergardener who didn't know what he was doing)needless to say us adults in the school were afraid. I do not work at the school but Volunteer there every day as a safety volunteer. I feel our children are safe but you never know. I also have an 18yr old senior we. If a shooting accurs I will not run to the school, but have my cell phone on for my OK call from him. But then if it does happen who really knows what we would do. Stormchaser |

Date: 3/10/2001 8:39:00 AM From Authorid: 18781 We have sat down and talked to our kids about it. In this day and age, you can never prepare your kids too much. i don't want them to think the world is all doom and gloom but I would like for them to be prepared. We had a shooting at this school last year. A father came into the parking lot and tried to shoot his estranged wife and two kids. He hit her car window but missed them. He then went into the liquor store and holed up there. He shot and killed the owner and then himself. We live in a very small town and noone thought something like that could happen but it did. I want my kids to be prepared. Aester |
