I remember this discussion on another message board - it had about 101 messages and somebody eventually figured out that certain places call it different things. I think they said the West Coast says pop, the East says soda, the South says Coke (even if they want a Pepsi) and the Midwest says soda pop. I like "pop" because it describes the soda - it's bubbly, and bubbles pop - and it's easier to say quickly.
