Merfolk

I don't know why, but I have always been fasinated by the myth of Merfolk, half fish, half human beings that live in the oceans and seas. Merfolk are supposedly the survivors of Atlantis, evolved in order to live in their underwater city. Ancient sea travellers often spoke of seeing beautiful women swimming along side their boats, but having the lower body of a fish, instead of legs. Sailors who were thrown overboard in heavy storms often accredited their survival to the rescue of mermaids. Some scholars believe that the mermaids were actually dolphins, but the story grew from long voyages aboard ships full of lonely men. *l* Just the little bit that I know of, if anyone has anything else to ad, I'd love to hear it!

Date: 2/28/2001 11:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 14571    During a cruise if a mermaid was seen following the ship a sailor was thrown overboard. This was done to please the mermaid and keep her from destroying the ship. They were also supposedly made when the world was created much like nymphs and fairies. There are also mer folk who live in ponds, rivers and lakes. One type even guards a river that leads to the home of a type of elf.
