Ever heard of Sirens? There suppose to be half-woman, half-birdlike creatures who sand such sweet songs to lure sailors to their doom. They were the daughters of Calliope. Sirens are skilled musicians both vocally and instrumentally. According to the writers who claimed there were three of them, one sang, one played the lyre, and one played the flute. They lived on a lonely, rocky island called Anthemoessa near the southwestern coast of Italy between the island of Aeaea and the rock of Scylla. There on the island awaiting passing ships. They were compainions of Persephone and were with her when she was kidnapped by Hades. As the servents of the goddess of the underworld, they sang prophecies relating to the kingdom of the god Hades and there voices were so sweet that enchanted sailors smashed their ships upon the rocks beneath the Sirens coastal meadow. They would also sing such sweet songs that sailors forgot about everything and died of hunger. It was prophesied when any ship was able to sail past their island without succumbing to the sweet song, the Sirens would leap into the sea and drown.
