In the Hands of God

This is a true story of a dramatic point in my life that made me change my entire outlook on my life. On November 1, 2000 my husband was in a car accident. He was on his way to work at 6am and he passed out in the car and hit two trees. The first tree was hit head on directly on the drivers side. Then the car bounced off and slid into another tree 20 feet behind the first tree. The car came to rest against the second tree with the drivers side door against the tree. From what the paramedics on scene told me the entire dashboard was wrapped around my husband, Kevin. We had a Ponitac Firebird, and the dashboard is pretty big because the car is wide. My husband's right foot was pushed through the floor, and his left hip was dislocated and pushed up to his waist with the dash around him. The roof had been pushed in and the point where the windshield connects with the metal of the roof had cut a 7 inch laceration on the right side of my husbands head. The paramedics told me that it took the firemen 30 minutes to cut Kevin out of the car with the Jaws of Life. Finally Kevin was released from the car and brought to the hospitol. At the local hospitol the on-call neurologist stiched Kevin's head up. I watched him do it, the laceration was as deep as his skull, While Kevin's head was being prepped for the stiches I examined the cut. To me it was interesting to be able to actually see his skull and the inside of his scalp, although I would of rather not had this happen! Anyway, after his head was stiched he had to be transported to another hospitol that has a trauma team, the hospitol in our town isn't very big and doesn't have a trauma team. They did not want to operate on Kevin's hip in town also because Kevin's brain was bleeding between two membranes. We arrived at the next hospitol and Kevin was examined again. The next day his hip was operated on and he now has 5 screws and a metal plate in his left hip. It will take 2 years for Kevin to be able to walk right, even then he may have a limp. Since the accident everyone I've talked to has told me that Kevin is lucky to be alive. He hit the trees at 65 mph! Kevin does not remember anything about the accident, he only remembers leaving the house and the next thing he knew he was in the hospitol after his surgery. The paramedics, doctors, police, and firemen have all told me that they didn't think Kevin was going to live and there was definatly and angel sitting in the seat beside Kevin. Both of our outlooks on life have changed since that day. We are going through a really tough time right now financial wise because Kevin cannot work yet, he cannot put any weight on his left leg at all!! But believe it or not we are both happy that he is alive and we thank God every day that we can enjoy eachother and our family.

I'd like to thank everyone who has replied to my story!!! I appriciate all of your prayers and kind words. It is hard to stay positive when your not sure what the future will hold, but we try. THANK YOU!!!!! :-)

Date: 2/11/2001 3:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 13354    Wow!!! This is SO AWESOME!!! A similar thing happened
to my mother when I was a little girl. She broke her neck
in 2 places and had some other injuries. I remember looking
at the car seeing that the only thing that was not completely
demolished was where she was sitting. God knew we needed a mother.
He also knew we needed a miracle!!! PRAISE GOD!!! Give Kevin a big
hug and tell him to keep fighting...

Date: 2/12/2001 12:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 15232    It's really nice to see you staying positive through such hard times!! I don't know if I could be so positive. Well, I do think his angels were protecting him. It sounds like he shouldn't have survived by the mph he was driving, but God has a plan for him, and that's why he was spared. I will pray for your husband's recovery. My brother was in an accident and in a coma for 2 weeks, and after he came out of it, there was a lot of therapy and rehabilitation to do. So, I know how incredibly stressful it can be, not including the financial stress! I hope everything works out for you guys. Take care,

Date: 2/16/2001 8:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 13387    My brother was in a car wreck several years ago. Trying to work full time and go to school full time, too, he fell asleep at the wheel driving to work one night. Amazingly he stayed in his lane but another car pulled out to pass and they hit head on. They estimated the other car's speed at 75 mph and my brother's at around 60. Everyone lived (a miracle in itself), but the real miracle was my brother. He never wore a seat belt, the car didn't have airbags, but he walked away from the wreck with only a broken jaw. The car was a mangled mess of scrap...I saw it myself. Only God and guardian angels could have kept him safe. The Shadow Crow.
