Don't Go

People gathered near and wide

at the sight of his grave,

each one bringing a story

of a joy he gave.

People around the casket,

his body laying inside,

and I was a little girl,

with nowhere left to hide.

They stayed there all day,

but at night each one was gone

untill only his wife and children

were there to carry on.

In the old mountain tradition

We stayed by his side

Untill he was placed in the ground

after a long car ride.

They dropped the box a bit too hard

And he sounded like thunder landing.

Mom let out a sob,

But I nodded in understanding.

He left this world with a bang

As he'd filled my every day.

One loud clap

and daddy was gone away.

Thirteen years later, I remember it all

Being big, strong, and crying not to cry.

Being always beside his caskett

but not saying goodbye.

Thirteen years later,

I still miss him so.

still want to cry

"daddy! Don't go."
