Back in the early fall f 1978, in New London new Hampshire, there was a grisley murder just on the outskirts of town, near Pleasant lake, as well as the Elkins cemetery. 26 year old, Cathy Millican, was in a wetland preserve taking note of bird spieces in the area for the New ampshire chapter of the Audobon society. It was approximately 4:30-5:30 pm on Tuesday October 24th,1978.

She was approached in the wetland preserve area by un unknown attacker, a few hundred yards from the road, along the trails, brutally stabbed to death, for no apparent reason. To my best of knowlege, her belongs as well as her car, parked out by the state highway were undisturbed. Her car, was observed by man passers by, a Volkswagon rabbit, as wellas another vehicle that was never discribed any further than " a grey car"

Extensive efforts, as well as a reward offer brought litle result to resolving the case. But there was a newly insued panic uopn the campus of Colby sawyer College, in town. At the time this was a womens college.

Interestingly, local papers did not follw up with continuing articles, her murder was quickly forgotten by most in central New Hampshire and vermont.

As the 1980s rolled in, a new string of murders began, mainly centering just fifteen miles west of New London, of a similar nature. But women had been abducted, then brought to woodland areas and murdered in a similar fashion to the murder of cathy Millican i 1978.

In a few reports of the womens abductions there seems to be a hint that some had been talking on or near Pay Telephones. And lookig back to the life of Cathy Millcan, durring her time in school, she woked for the phone company....any connection? Perhaps, she knew her attacker? Perhaps worked with this attacker at some time?

Fro some reserch, i found t heart wrenchig to read cathy Millicans obituary, a young woman who had accomplished much in her short life that ended at the age of 26. The list of her accomplishments was astounding for someone her age....traveling to schools all over, including London, graduating with high honors...obvously a bright light snuffed too young.

Clues and information regarding her murder, could solve atleast half a dozen more, and prevent unknown horrors for others.

So i am writing this as a plea to any Colby sawyer grads, from the 1970s....pleaing for any information, any recollecion of that October 24th day, just before the first snow dusting...in 1978..or anyone from the area of rt. 11 in Elkins New Hampshire.

And by all means, contact the New Hampshire State Police or The New London Police Dept.

It was estimated that the age of the attacker was in his early to mid twenties, in 1978...that means he could be in his upper forties, ad still be harming other people elsewhere.

Also see other author on this page.....the story is titled "Connecticut river knife murders".....Cathy Millican was where this all started....

Again, contact NH State Polce, or New London, NH police with information if you have any.

How it changed my life:

.Just interested in the history of the Upper valley area, of vermont and New Hampshire. Hoping a resolution can come to these cases as well as loved ones lives...even after so long.

Date: 2/15/2001 6:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 15394    An awful thought that this person is still out there and probably doing this all over the country.... very sad.... I so wish I could do something!!!
Date: 3/10/2001 3:59:00 AM    I have been familiar with these cases, through twenty years of work wih finding/locating missing persons....wow what a trip to think back upon that time, when many women in that area were missing....and turned up as weather ravaged bits in the woods, in that area......and so true, this attacker, if Cathy was the first victim, could be in his upper 40s or early 50s, now.....still attacking in other parts of the country. Maybe someday, the answers will be evident, and a pattern of behavior will have been stopped. And families of the victims will have some sense of closure.
Date: 3/10/2001 4:05:00 AM    Yes...this same person could be still committing similar crimes....especially, sincehe has obvously gotten away with it before....
