Lots of big developments have unraveled in the world lately, the United States being no exception. The International Court of Justice is charging Israel with genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, and while I certainly agree that that is what is going on, I'm gonna save that topic for another time. Horrible stuff with really no excuse to justify it at this point. On a much, much, much, much, much brighter note, the Detroit Lions play in the NFC Championship game. Their first championship-anything bout since 1957, when they beat the San Francisco 49ers in San Francisco. *Crossing my fingers that history repeats itself* Two wins away from their first Super Bowl Era League Championship. Can I get a ROAR?
To the point of the post...
Ron DeSantis finally dropped the US Presidential Race for 2024. I read in early January news that one of his campaign aides said if his support in polls don't improve, he would drop out sometime after January 15. The gesture likely has some mixed reception between the GOP and MAGA die-hards. This may or may not conclude any serious partisan opposition to Trump going forward, depending on how things go with Nikki Haley. I would love to vote for Haley in a primary just to mess with the GOP voting process, and nothing else. DeSantis dropping the race puts my mind at much more ease with the whole fascistic GOP machine back in full swing. The only way we'll hear from him in the Presidential Race is if he is picked as a running mate. He's indicated he won't do it for Haley if she's nominated. For that reason to me, it's highly unlikely he would do it for Trump, despite the amount of GOP die-hards that would drool to vote for such a ticket. Trump may have helped DeSantis launch his political career in Florida. But DeSantis does not at all seem like the type to take the back seat to anyone. With Trump being way older and the face of a generation of cringe voters, there'd be no hurt in DeSantis serving himself some humble pie. If I were a Trumper or fash, a Trump-DeSantis ticket would be the equivalent of being delivered Willy Wonka's Republican Golden Ticket. But, I digress. Whenever things look bleak for Dems, things tend to look way worse for Republicans. The current political picture shows that.
Let's see. I remember reading on Google Friday afternoon that a development in Trump's case with victim E. Jean Carroll almost compelled him to have some fit or tirade, storming out during the court proceeding. An hour or two later, some articles and Facebook posts say that Trump owes $83.3 million for defaming suit. Even if he is a billionaire and even if that isn't a lot of money to him in the grand scheme of things, it can't be good for his ego. He's had a mugshot. He's been forced to pay millions and has 91 indictments against him. We can only hope going forward that some day he'll be put in the clinker. It's still hard to imagine and at best probably a long way's off. But it could happen. I was hopeful about it when he first got elected. From about 2019 until early 2022, I lost hope. From then, I have been getting more cautiously optimistic. I have no idea how this presidential race will turn out, even if by an Act of God Trump is given a prison sentence before this fall. Biden's popularity is still in the muck, but the so-called experts say the economy is doing better and about to hit its peak of positive performance, or something. Let's see how it is in the springtime. What I am curious about are those potentials for economic and fiscal improvement--such as how low the Federal Budget Deficit could be reduced come October 1st. I still think Biden has a better chance at winning than most news polls indicate. A lot still needs to change. I wish we would stop giving military aid to Israel. That might help Biden's electability in light of the ensuing chaos that has resulted in 36 hospitals in Gaza being bombed inoperable. Hard to say. As I said, when Dems have a tough time these days, Republicans are almost sure to have an even tougher time. Republican gains in the House for the 2022 midterms were so miniscule, I was of the opinion that no one really won that chamber. 3 seats have been vacated by Republicans since the skirmish with Kevin McCarthy. The 2024 Election for Biden could be almost exactly as it was for Obama in 2012. A million things could happen in November, just as a million things could happen between now and then.
