We’re all a bunch of lab-rats when you think about it

Northwestern University researchers have developed new virtual reality (VR) goggles for mice.

Besides just being cute, these miniature goggles provide more immersive experiences for mice living in laboratory settings. By more faithfully simulating natural environments, the researchers can more accurately and precisely study the neural circuitry that underlies behavior.

Compared to current state-of-the-art systems, which simply surround mice with computer or projection screens, the new goggles provide a leap in advancement. In current systems, mice can still see the lab environment peeking out from behind the screens, and the screens’ flat nature cannot convey three-dimensional (3D) depth. In another disadvantage, researchers have been unable to easily mount screens above mice’s heads to simulate overhead threats, such as looming birds of prey.

Neurobiologist Daniel Dombeck The new VR goggles bypass all those issues. And, as VR grows in popularity, the goggles also could help researchers glean new insights into how the human brain adapts and reacts to repeated VR exposure — an area that is currently little understood.

Date: 12/28/2023 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hey Larry "L.D." here: I scored one of my largest field rats, so far this year, this very morning.

kronk---It was indeed, a good one, dog. If we'd saved all the mosquitoes that we swatted, this morning, and added them to the pot; we could have one heck of a
fine "field rat soup."

"L.D."---Yeah, but you don't know what those bloodsuckers have been nibbling on. That pair of roach killer, cowboy boot you found in the shed gave the dish quite
the unique flavor.

kronk---Dig it, dog. On top of that, we can use the boots, again.

"L.D."---Who's boots were those anyway. They've been in the shed for, like, forever?

kronk---Those belonged to my grandmother's cousin; Tochesa' Louisa Gros Patra' Malone. She wore a size 14 2XX Wide.

"L.D."---Hala !!!

Date: 12/29/2023 4:51:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 5940    Hey L.D.! Have you and Kronk ever used night vision goggles? If so, have you ever spotted those field rats looking back at you with there night vision goggles?

Nothing like cooking in the great outdoors, am I right? And a good cup of cowboy coffee to go with it.

Date: 12/29/2023 6:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hey Larry We dare not venture out into the night, around here. The marsh is so close that we have an endless supply of bloodthirsty mosquitoes all year long. In
fact, this morning sees our hardest frost, so far this winter. The sun will thaw out the mosquitoes and they'll be ravenous by ten A.M. I actually
caught that rat, myself. "Fang and claw," baby.

kronk---You ah killa', dog!

"L.D."---Got any bicarbonate of soda? Ugh! That rat soup gave me gas. I believe it may have been your cousin's boot.

kronk---"They" didn't call her "Toe Cheese Ugh," for nothin'...hehe..

"L.D."---Burp...Ugh!

kronk---
