...Hi Ginger! So many good Hallowe'en memories across a wide number of years, from childhood to present day. Hallowe'en happened along just shortly we had moved into our first home and I was determined to let the local kids know who the new guy in the neighbourhood was. I bought large Ziploc bags and piles of the best treats that I could remember as loving when a kid. Each Ziploc got a hefty portion of candies and I estimated that it was a years' worth of decay attained over the course of one evening. When my sons were young, it was a joy to take them out Trick~or~treating. The looks were awestruck! So much candy and goodies! For the asking! The oldest Hallowe'en memory I have is from when I was about five years old. My mom had taken my older sister and I out door to door and we were on our way back home when a man in scary makeup jumped out of a bush and yelled. My mom screamed and we were off and running. It was her younger brother in the bush. |

I have a memory that always brings a smile to my face. Years and years back, a friend and I were planning on egging a few friends' homes to get back at them for doing something to us (can't remember what it was at this time as this was back in 1988 or so). I shoved about 5 eggs into my pant pocket, and we were going to make our getaway. I had to distract my parents as they wouldn't have let me go out with all those eggs. I turned on the kitchen faucet and washed my hands but in doing that, I leaned against the kitchen counter. All the eggs in my pants were crushed in the process. My friend's eyes were watering, and he was covering his mouth suppressing laughter and I had to carefully make my way to my room to change my pants. I joined my friend outside after changing and we nearly died laughing. BTW, later on, we were riding our bicycles around and a car passed us by and threw eggs at us. I escaped the egging but my friend caught one on the shoulder! |

I was always a stick in the mud when it came to this particular holiday. At ones place of employment they encourage any who wish to participate to dress up, within reason of course. ( Afterall, who wants to see a female employee that’s about to retire after fifty years come as “ Lady Godiva?” So, this year at work they told me to get into costume or volunteer as a Candy Striper assisting those in need at the hospital. Well, I never shave my legs so I decided to go as “ The Invisible Man.” But, nobody noticed me…. |

Just like you, we are treasuring those memories more and more as life goes on. |

Hekler. Your story reminds me of the first house we bought. Halloween time was rolling around and we wanted to really do something special. We hid speakers in the bushes next to the front door, and thought it would be fun to make spooky noises through the microphone as we saw kids come for their treats. Well the first kid of the night was our 5 year old daughters best friend Kenny. Our 'wwwhhhooo wwhhhoo' over the speakers just about made the poor kid turn inside out, and he ran as fast as his little legs could manage back across the street to his home. We were cracking up laughing and almost crying at the same time. We cringed at the thought of ruining his trick-or-treating. |

My most favorite has to be my first time I ever went trick or treating, at ... get ready for it... 23. yes you read that right, 23. When I was a kid my parents got so paranoid by the news about kidnappings and such that they became over protective, and did not let me or my brother go trick or treating. Even though we lived in a super safe and tight knight neighborhood. It sucked becasue we had to watch our friends from school come to our house even to ask us if we could go and we were stuck handing out candy (actually my parents handed out money, and we became known as the house with the dollar bills ) so as for my very first time trick or treating, I was a nanny at the time and I dressed up in my youngest nanny charge's(age 2) fairy wings and a tutu while I went around with her and her brother (age 4) and also had a sign on my chest that said "this is really my first time trick or treating, no not the kids" their parents approved of it and also took pictures to help make it more memorable. |

So many. One of mine was Halloween 2005. I was 16 and I met and my girlfriend at that time (not together anymore, but we're cool) at her and her friends' house for a party. A bunch of other of her friends came. We watched The Fog and had a great time trick-or-treating and partying. |

Thanks Ginger! See, it never pays to have bad intentions and we ended up having eggs thrown at us! But high school students being high school students, I'm sure our intended targets did something to warrant such a response. LOL! I had another memory of something that happened on another Halloween that I believe was a year later as I remember it being 1989 or so. A friend of mine had said in class for us to go the city cemetery at night to look for an angel gravestone that reportedly looked at you if you flashed your high beams at it. Three of us went that night and the setting was just perfect for a cemetery ride out on Halloween as it was foggy and cold. We got part of the way into the cemetery when a car further in put its high beams on and chased us out. I remember seeing the car as being white and long (think like a 70s Lincoln Continental) and it only chased us to the overpass by the cemetery. Years later, I told this story to a writer that was collecting haunted stories about the area where I lived, and he knew the workers out there at the cemetery. They told him that there were no long cars in their maintenance fleet ever except for the hearse and that was black. |

Ginger In my freshman year of high school, which ended up being the last time I ever went trick or treating, I roamed through the neighborhood picking up goodies and made it to my high school librarian's house. So, I knocked and she answered, and gave me a load of treats. Then, as I turned to walk away, her chihuahua grabbed me by the pant leg and refuses to let go. It took the woman and her husband, both, to dislodge that dog from my pants. I guess that I'm lucky it only weighed 8 lbs. Good to read you, lady. Write on..... |

Hey Ginger!!! SO glad to see you and George still posting What a great memory to share of Halloween. The last couple years my family and I have started a tradition of sorts walking around with the kids as they get candy. My youngest boy is 2 years old so it was an exciting year for us with him as this year was the first year he was able to actually walk up to the houses. He was a little confused on what we were all doing walking up to everyone's house, but once he got candy from a few houses he quickly understood. The only challenge was when his little bucket filled up and we went to empty it, he cried thinking we were taking all his candy away. Another part of the tradition, is getting our adult friends together who also have kids, and we go in a big group. Us adults also dress up, and I've dressed as Michael Myers the past few years. I picked up a legitimate mask from the recent Halloween movie - "Halloween Kills" and its so legit along with my jump suit, that this year I was stopped and had many many pictures taken with people, and even ended being given full sized chocolate bars at a couple houses!! Anyways, I love Halloween - its a special, unique time of year. In September I lost my mother, and having gone through old camcorder footage, I would have to say that one of my favourite Halloween's as a child was in 1992. My mother dressed up as a witch, I was clown, my twin brother was batman and my uncle was Dracula. Before going out to collect candy, and right after dinner we used to play Halloween music and have dance parties in our living room. One such video captured this memory on video, and its strange because I remembered that particular memory even before I saw the video on the camcorder. After getting the videos digitized I found the tape and I could not believe that, that specific memory was actually captured by my dad. Our family was so happy, all dancing, laughing.....my mom made such a great witch with her sneering witch laugh. I really, really miss her. Thank you for sharing your memories, and it was nice reading everyone else favourite memories. |
