Though Week 7 of the regular NFL Season is the Carolina Panthers' bye week, we still haven't gained much steam. We are 0-6 and the only team to not have a single win of the 32 NFL teams up to now for the year. I don't expect it to improve, despite some surprisingly impressive contradictions for the team. It goes without saying we are at the bottom of our t conference division (NFC South-Falcons, Buccaneers, Saints, Panthers) in light of a most dismal record. However, Bryce Young's performance @ quarterback is making gradual improvements and adjustments with each of most games. Here's something crazy to comprehend, though: despite being the worst team in our division, let alone the entire league record-wise, we also have scored the most points of any of the four NFC South teams by far this season, despite it all. Only in Carolina. It is quite a spectacle. I wish we could find a way to win, for sure.
A lot of people don't think Bryce Young will be a great quarterback long-term. Time, opportunity, and effort will tell. He is short for the average QB, 5'10" I believe. He is also a rookie in his very first year. Whatever hopes we have, we can't expect him to be elite in his first year, let alone pull most of the team's weight. The Panthers' offensive line has so many problems that have needed addressing since our Superbowl loss-between quarterback protection and more throwing weapons. What's so aggravating is that we are somehow worse off now than we were when firing college coach Matt Rhule last year. Putting him in charge of a professional football team was a huge mistake by itself. Nevertheless, at this point in the last three seasons, we would have won at least one game by now. Another huge mistake is our team owner and staff's refusal to see the potential in officially giving the head coaching job to Steve Wilkes at the end of last year. He brought energy and smiles to the team. We won a few with the remainder of the year under his short-lived head-coaching tenure in Carolina. But as always, someone with the right amount of power and the wrong mindset decides he shouldn't continue leading the team after all that's said and done. Thankfully, Steve Wilkes is a defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, and I hope the best for him. Enter Frank Reich as official Carolina Panthers Head Coach for 2023. He oversaw coaching for the Indianapolis Colts during their successful 2007 Superbowl Run. He was also offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles going into their first Superbowl win in 2018. On paper, this looks impressive. But he was also head coach for the Colts again. His record as head coach with the Colts for the last season or two hasn't been as good. My co-worker friend who is a Colts fan didn't see much in having Frank Reich as his team's coach prior. With an 0-6 coaching record in Carolina thus far, I am clearly not impressed. Frank Reich was likely hired only because of his past experience as a Carolina Panthers quarterback, and nothing else. I wouldn't doubt there might have been some racism on part of team owner David Tepper, in light of scrapping Steve Wilkes for Frank Reich. It may be a stretch, but in light of all the dumb decisions our team owners have made the past several years, it wouldn't be surprising. Nearly every person I have talked to in person agrees we should have kept Steve Wilkes as head coach.
The Carolina Panthers haven't really had a good season since 2017. So, if the next few years are anything like the past six, we aren't going to make many strides. I've seen one user on Facebook theorize that the owner, David Tepper, wants to destroy and ram the team into the ground. Regardless of the team's value, he will still be sitting on billions and probably stay in the top 2 or 3 richest NFL owner list. Do I think the theory is legit? Hard to say. I would like to say it's malarkey. But like I said before, many dumb and very questionable decisions on the team owners' part have been made the past several years, and that is why it can't be ruled out entirely in my view. And to be totally honest, I really don't know how much more dumb decisions I can stand by before I jump ship. I'm liking the Bengals of course and tempted to become a Lions fan like Dad. He definitely made a smart decision last summer to go for them. Lol. If the Lions go to the Superbowl this year, I'm probably rooting for them. They haven't won a Superbowl yet, but still won four NFL Championships prior to the Superbowl Era. In light of a lot of economic and financial upheaval, such accomplishments today could inspire some hope for cities like Detroit. It's possible.
Back to the point of the post, who do you all think is the worst team in the league?
