Heart and Soul I've felt extremely lonely while surrounded by hundreds of people, and also felt like I "really belonged," while alone at my desktop, logged on to USM. You make a great point, lady. Write on..... |

Yeah, it’s not easy being a hermit at times. I find that I have friends , but my real close friends live far far away. I do have family and care for my younger brother, but there are times I wished that I could fly off somewhere and disappear for awhile. I’m on Facebook, but seldom use it except to occasionally say hi to someone I haven’t seen in some time, other I tend to avoid. But I have found that I remain closest to those that mean the most to me. |

Thank you both for sharing your thoughts. Being a hermit has its advantages and disadvantages for sure. |

I have read articles that state we are more connected than ever before and paradoxically more distant from each other. I talk to my friends less than I did before, even though it's easier now. I think that for some people, particularly introverts, solitude is kind of like a drug. I need to be careful, because I can spend a lot of time alone and be content. I feel that if we become more accustomed to solitude, we begin to forget what it's like to be comfortable around others, which makes us crave the comfort of solitude. I worry this could slowly erodes our ability to properly socialize and form bonds/friendships. |
