Caught in the Middle of a Cyclone

When I was a teenager I went to Papua New Guinea for a month and lived with the Indigenous people in the islands. We were sailing out from an Island one day and the wind became ferocious, so much that we had to pull down the sail, we got onto land and ran for shelter, that night we stayed in a hut and the eye of the Cyclone passed right over us ,we thought the hut would be flattened. I had a small bottle of whisky that I was going to give to the Chief when leaving but ended up drinking it that night. I had a really good sleep and in the morning the Cyclone had passed. In the morning we saw that a tidal surge had washed away a few huts.

Cyclone, or, as we call it along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast, hurricane, is serious business. I have spent quite a few "restless" moments, caught in the path of one of those "big winds."

On a storm, back in 2008, we had a 14 ft. tidal surge, in my neck of the woods. We had a 17 ft high levee around our town. That was close. Anyway, we lived through it and here we are writing about it. Write on, 74.....
