You can already buy solar powered USB chargers. I have a small solar USB power bank. The issue is that it takes a long time for the small solar panels to collect enough sunlight and charge. Depending on where you place it, you can have the panel on your windowsill all day and it will barely charge. A solar panel on a phone would be even smaller and may be almost useless. Hand cranked chargers do exist, as do pedal ones, and you can even make your own. But again it would take a long time to fully charge a phone. I suppose it would be good for emergencies. A hand crank built into a phone would likely only be useful for low powered phones as generators get hot, clunky, add weight, and people wouldn't like them for everyday use. Just think how long it takes to charge a low powered radio or flashlight, and you can imagine how long it would take to charge the battery of an average smart phone. |
