I recall a day we did not want to be home.
But we wanted to be out at the park for our first time on on our own.
But the storm clouds gathered and it began to storm and rain.
We built our own park inside and we just played all day.
And the armed guards of my memory.
Keep me close to that day.
I know in your memory.
It was long ago and far away.
And the beast creeps in.
And forces everything to change.
The unseen foe we know as time.
The beast no-one can ever take.
I recall the day you kissed my bruised forehead.
And you said “Your head’s all better now” as I tucked you to bed.
From where I bashed my head while leaning down to give you a hug and kiss goodnight.
And no matter how I screwed up, you made me believe that it always was alright.
And the armed guards of my memory.
Keep me close to that night.
Knowing in your mind and memory.
It was far ago and out of sight.
And the beast creeps in.
And forces everything to change.
The unseen foe we know as time.
The beast no-one can ever take.
I recall a day I lost my lover and our home.
For reasons you could not understand and some you did not know.
But you kept me strong in the face of fear and proved to be my best friend.
But now you have friends and getting chased by girls and taught me how to bend.
And the armed guards of my memory.
Keeps me close to those days.
But now you’re almost grown up.
And it’s supposed to be this way.
But the beast creeps in.
And forces everything to change.
The unseen foe we know as time.
The beast no-one can ever take.

() I wrote this 13 years ago after having to relinquish my son into foster care and the storms of mixed emotions it caused he and I both. It was when we were homeless and sleeping in the streets. After a week had passed and no shelter was ready and able to take us in, I realized I could not protect him out there and decided to let him go temporarily. I was able to claw my way off of the streets and with a little help and got him back in my custody 2 years later. This song is for him
