...I think I need help!

I don't know if it's boredom or if I'm having some kind of older guy crisis but I found myself spending a little time
checking out the used car ads online today. I really don't NEED another car at this time but I must admit that the time is right
to invest in a "project" car. Where does common sense come into play here?

Ideally, I'd be looking for an early 1930s Buick,1950s to early 60's station wagon or a copy of my first car, a 1962 Ford Galaxie.

On the unfortunate side, I'm cheap. I was playing with a figure of five to ten thousand dollars.
For that kind of money, you get a rusted hulk with no floors and a sketchy fram.
Another $40,000.00 will be required before anyone will let it back on the road.

That left the available choices to road whales from the early 70's to the early 80's: T-Birds, Lincolns,
Cadillacs, Crown Vics and other cars that use $5.00 of gas per mile.

SO...I'm scanning through all of these ads for overstuffed bordellos on wheels and what
I finally pause on is the listing for a 1976 Chrysler CorrrrrDO-BA.

Those commercials are still deeply imprinted in my mind.
I want to get myself a white suit, practice rolling my R's and hit the streets.

You just know that folks are just dying to sit on your Corinthian leather upholstery.

How it changed my life:

It hasn't yet. Things like this keeps the neighbors on their toes. They don't know when to start complaining about the noise you're going to be making as you fix the thing up.

...my only other option was the 1958 Chevy Biscayne that looked like a holdover from Timothy Leary or the Partridge Family.

Date: 8/21/2021 4:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    Ahhh, back to the days, huh. Yes, our first car was a 60's station wagon and yepperz, it had that ever present status symbol ... wood on the sides. Lotta cars from back then to now. We are firmly in the mini van era, with a practical serving of small truck on the side.
Date: 8/21/2021 4:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    My favorite models are the fun and flirty, AMC AMX GT. I don't know, something about the simple body style, but hiding a wanna-be muscle car inside. Then my sporty side will always get my head to turn and stare if I get a chance to see the elusive creature on wheels ... the Pantera. Vroom, Vroom !!!
Date: 8/21/2021 1:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hekler A very timely post, for sure. I had to be towed in, this morning. Made it two miles from the house and the old truck coasted to the curb and refused to come out of it. Grandson says it's the fuel pump. He's the expert. Could be the windshield wiper, for all I know?

Anyway, I suggest checking barns in middle America. Last winter, "they" tore down a barn out in the sticks, around here, and found a 1967 Pontiac GTO, sitting on cinder blocks and badly in need of a washing. The thing was complete and had three thousand miles on it. Keep looking. Still a few out there.

...Hey Larry...the neighbors (at different points in time) make me get rid of a perfectly
good '65 Riviera and also a '69 Falcon undergoing a V8 swap from a lowly six cylinder.

This wasn't the doings of some HOA. Sure, I made a lot of noise and it didn't look that great.
I was happy. They weren't.

...Hiya Ginger!

When I was just a wee lad, station wagons were looked upon as ungainly troop carriers
and they had all the panache of a rowboat among yachts.

Looking back, these may have found use as a symbol urging precautions when pursuing intimate relations.
I bet old pop sure would have liked to be driving the GTO instead of the aircraft carrier.

I almost bought an AMX off of a cousin one time. Always working on that thing because he pounded
the life out of it. Nice looking car but very unhappy where it mattered.

...Kronk...you mean there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

I know the cars are out there...I read Barn Finds daily.
The problem is that most of these fresh finds are sold to flippers that will turn that $500.00 car
that they paid for into a $15,000.00 car just by giving it a wash and posting a pic online.

The hobby has gone crazy with stupid prices so all you're left with is absolute garbage and
1970's land yachts that no one has formed an interest in as of yet.
Enjoy your gas mileage.

As for your truck, you should convert it to steam. It's the way of the future in the U.S. after
the carnage of your next civil war. Don't forget to stock up on Trump steaks and Trump pure spring water.

Date: 8/22/2021 9:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hekler Yes, it's true. In our day, one dollar, would buy a soda, two burger meals and a fried pie. The other day, I had a "saw buck" left over and thought I might want a chocolate bar. I had to put it back.

I have a friend who worked with me and dealt in second hand cars, on the side, for forty years. He actually is very talented. I went by the other day and he was out in the yard, so I stopped and asked, "What are you going to do with those two old Chargers? They've been sitting here, rusting away, for the last fifteen years. Why don't you just donate them?"

He tells me, "they are increasing in value, every day." What?

Anyway, my truck is back in action. My grandson was right. It was the fuel pump. We had to unbolt and remove the bed, because the fuel pump is located in the gas tank. Took all of the yesterday, and we finished up this morning. I'm seriously thinking of asking "Oprah" for a new truck.

...Kronk...those cars are increasing in value every day until they're not increasing in value any more.

All they'll be good for then is the VIN plate if the car was anything of importance in the first place (rare).

Yep, the "good old days" when you could get a running car for less than a hundred bucks and spend an afternoon
playing Erwin Rommel in your new field car.

Date: 8/24/2021 5:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hekler Your "Erwin Rommel" reference flashed me back, bigtime. Back when I was about fourteen, our high school principal, who owned a couple of acres, bought himself a new ride and gave his kids his old car, to ride around the property.

It was a 1953 Chevrolet Belaire and the kids named it "the Green Bomb." We went round and round in that old heap. I miss those times.

...yep, it's a lot of fun until you plant the nose of the car into a stream gully and nobody wants to help you tow it out.

Used to be a lot of farms and open lots around here. Now all ugly housing developments. Going to have to move more north into the deep freeze.

Date: 8/26/2021 8:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hekler I was actually sweet on the principal's daughter. I never worked out. He knew me too well.

My first vehicle was a 1964 Pontiac LeMans. My cousin begged me to let him drive it in front of a girl's house. I finally relented and sure enough, she was out in the yard. He hung his left arm out the window, blew the horn at her and when she waved back, he got so flustered that he drove off the road and into the ditch. I was upset, but had to laugh at the look on my cousin's face. The girl's father and uncle came and helped us push the car out.....Priceless...

Kronk...I know those types of moments too well. Memories that will never fade.

A lot of them didn't feel like such good fun at the time though.
If nothing else, you did get to meet members of the local constabulary.
