We could always do like Fidel Castro did back in the 80’s….send them on boats to Cuba. Or buy them one way bus tickets to Hekler’s neck of the woods. He likes having company! |
Date: 7/2/2021 9:26:00 AM From Authorid: 13969 Caitlin Jenner is perhaps qualified to speak some sensitive issues. Homelessness does not appear to be one of them because this really comes across like..."but, they look so shabby, can't we just, like, launch them into the sun or something? My aesthetics!" You can't just designate a homeless camp somewhere and expect all homeless people to just take foothold there and there only. Why do socialites treat problems like novelties? The beach is destroyed. And what about the poor people that are homeless, Caitlin? Have we considered the destruction to their life or are we just worried about the view while we accelerate our skin cancer lounging next to the water? |

...that Itlyn Jenner is a genius! Why address a problem when you can just pack the homeless into shipping containers and send them off somewhere else. Some other place can inherit the problems that California has created. Still, there are other solutions. I have read a lot recently about cruise lines sending unused ships in decent condition off to the breaker yards. Why? Can these ships not be repurposed into living quarters for homeless people? Beyond that, once these ships are full to capacity, can they not be used for target practice by the U.S. Navy or sent to the China Sea to draw fire from the Chinese and deplete their ammunition stockpiles. There are so many other solutions available to this problem. Jenner probably has room enough in it's armpits to house at least two or three homeless people and when you factor the space between it's ears, there's half of the homeless on Venice Beach resettled right there. Call your Republican Congressman today and make real and viable suggestions people. It only takes two minutes of thought as evidenced by Jenner's solution. |

...I just had another brainstorm. The Grand Canyon is pretty much empty, isn't it? You could airdrop 'em all in there and block the exits. Think Donner Party. The problem would eventually go away all by itself. I'm moving to California. I think I'd have a good chance at being elected Governor. Vote for Hekler! |

...and then too, there's Antarctica. Lots of beachfront property there that isn't being used and I'm pretty sure that winter clothing can be purchased pretty cheaply at the local Goodwill or SallyAnn. The penguins and international scientists there make take issue with this but it wouldn't be long before they all got eaten anyway so there's that problem gone before it barely had a chance to get a foothold. Vote Hekler for President! Vote often. |

...Kronk...I can see that as a good reason to want to move some of them along and where I live is no exception. Homeless people and panhandlers are hustled off by the cops in a hurry because it reflects badly on the image our town is trying to portray. Nasty dirty homeless people! I like to go out either for a walk or bicycling at night for leg exercise and I see some of the homeless people after they come out of "hiding". One guy in particular is said to have psychological problems but he's always clean looking and the few times I've spoken with him he has always sounded reasonably intelligent. The year before last was really cold in the winter. Late at night,he was holing up in the atrium of my bank branch because it was heated. It was an inconvenience to me only because to use the indoor ATM, I'd probably wake him up so I would use the machine in the drive-thru. I got to know all the spots he'd crash for the night (he would stagger them) and he lived fairly rough. I haven't seen him yet this year so perhaps they finally moved him along or he hopefully found a place to live either with family/friends or at a charity facility. I haven't come across any crazies like the one to which you referred so either our cops are moving them along fast or we just aren't their kinda town. There is also this older guy, around 75, double leg amputee, that will sit in his wheelchair in the parking lot of the local mall. Never closer than 100 feet away from the store and he only does this around the Christmas season, wearing an old Santa suit. He isn't bothering anyone but he still gets rousted when some upstanding citizen reports him for whatever. |

Unless Jenner is going to put her money where her mouth is, maybe she should think twice before speaking publically. Doesn't her idea smack of internment camps during war times? Where does Jenner suppose clean water and sanitation is going to magically appear from in the empty fields? Many of the larger cities have water fountains and port-a-potties around homeless encampments. Also, is Jenner going to buss them to shelters that try to feed the hungry? Gosh, such short sighted of her to speak on a topic where she clearly has no depth. |

Short sighted people usually tend to be far away, so far away that it’s hard for them to see what’s really going on. History and politics tend to repeat itself because short sighted figures tend to go for what benefits the few and not the many. We sure could use an Elenor Roosevelt about now. |

From Authorid: 52489
"Where to put the homeless?" is the wrong question. The right question is, "Why are there homeless, and how do we solve the situation." The fact is, there are no easy answers, but it's clear there are four basic causes of homelessness: 1. Drug addiction. Most people don't realize it, but a large proportion of the homeless are those who have lost everything due to their addictions. Any solution to the homeless problem must address the problem of addiction, as well. 2. Mental illness. Another large segment of the homeless are those who suffer from mental instabilities. Before 1980, every state had, on average, fifty thousand psychiatric beds for patients. The Reagan Administration slashed the social safety net and reduced that number to about 5,000. This dumped psychiatric patients into municipal programs and onto city streets, which had no way to handle them. 3. Social programs. The United States has one of the poorest social safety nets in the developed world. There needs to be a revitalized effort put into urban renewal, anti-poverty programs, feeding the hungry, a standard living wage, and job re-training. Only by strengthening society from the bottom up (as opposed to trickle-down) will the destitute leave the streets. 4. Affordable housing. The free-market philosophy is, "The market will provide." In other words, business will always make things which people need. This is, unfortunately, not true. Businesses make things people with money will buy, but those who have very little money frequently go without. This is especially true when it comes to homes. Affordable living space is always in short supply because construction firms and architects want to build things which will make them money. There's very little cash to be made in cheap apartments. What's needed are lucrative contracts offered to those who can design and build afffordable neighborhoods for the destitute. Commercial districts could also be revitalized by using the old method of building apartment spaces on top of businesses. By creating inexpensive speaces for those on limited budgets we can get the urban poor off the streets. These are just a few examples, but they offer a realistic approach to a complex problem. |
