Buff Ledge was a private girl’s summer camp in Vermont. On August 7th, 1968, Michael Lapp, 16, was working at the camp as a maintenance man. He was liked and admired by nearly everyone, especially by 19-year-old Janet Cornell, a water ski instructor.
On this hot summer day, the two were enjoying some time alone. The rest of the camp had gone to nearby Burlington to compete in a swimming competition. The two teens were relaxing on the camp’s dock beside the lake. As the sun set, and the stars began to appear, their attention was drawn to a bright light in the sky. At first, Michael believed it to be the planet Venus.
Then the light dropped low in the sky, and two smaller lights split off from it. All three began to do some aerobatic maneuvers, which thrilled the young people. The three lights stopped moving, briefly assumed a triangular formation, and then passed directly over their heads. They could see the original light was a large metallic disk, and it moved with a sound which Michael later described as “A thousand tuning forks at once.”
The disk circled about, briefly descended into the lake itself, and then reemerged and glided toward the teens over the surface of the water.
As it approached, Michael could see the top of the disc was a transparent dome, and two childlike beings were inside. He made a swinging motion with his hand, and they mimicked his movement, so it was obvious they were alive. At that moment, he felt something brush against his mind.
The disc rose until it was directly overhead. Then a bright beam of light illuminated the two teens. It was so bright, Michael said he could see the bones in his hand and in Janet’s legs. The light was so intense it felt almost like a liquid.
Suddenly, a feeling of panic overwhelmed the two of them as the thought of being kidnapped loomed in their minds. Michael shouted, “We don’t want to go!”
The next thing they knew, they were lying on the dock in the dark of night. The sounds of the camp were loud, and it was obvious the others had returned from the swim meet. Michael looked at Janet and saw she was drowsy and disoriented, almost in a trance.
Curiously, the two of them didn’t discuss what they had seen to anyone during the rest of their time at camp. They went their separate ways at the end of summer, and never mentioned the incident for many years to come.
Five years later, Michael began to have recurring nightmares of being kidnapped and held against his will. Over time, he realized all of the bad dreams had a common thread—they all related to his time at Buff Ledge. His night terrors finally spurred him to seek help from the Center for UFO Studies. Investigator Walter Webb was assigned to his case, and after hearing the story, he suggested regressive hypnosis as a way to ease the young man’s suffering.
Under hypnosis, Michael revealed that the intense beam of light actually lifted him into the air and inside the disc ship. Once his eyes adjusted, he saw Janet lying on a table being examined by four identical beings. He said the aliens were small, about the size of children. They had large eyes which wrapped around the sides of their head, mouths without lips, two small holes instead of a nose, no ears, and hands with three fingers and webbing between the digits. Their touch was cold and clammy. They communicated through telepathy rather than voice. Their mission, they said, was “to make life like humans, but elsewhere.” That ominous statement was delivered without further explanation.
Mr. Webb managed to locate Janet and persuaded her to undergo hypnosis as well. Her account confirmed Michael’s and added a few extra details. She recalled the intense cold of the examination table, as well as sensations of someone pulling at her hair and pinching at her neck. Fluids were removed from her body and scrapings were taken from her skin.
Strangely enough, although Michael observed the examination of Janet, he did not undergo one.
Webb also spoke to other employees of the camp who had observed the lights in the sky that same night, although they were not near the lake at the time. He also spoke to two people who swore they had seen a similar craft hovering over the lake one year previously. The disc remained in the area for approximately twenty (20) minutes before streaking away.
Had the amphibious aliens been doing a “dry run” for a future abduction?
How it changed my life:It didn't, but I can't help but notice how closely it resembles other abduction cases. The light which pulled them into the air is identical to a similar "tractor beam" which occurred in the Allagash Abduction eight years later. Also, the Bluff Ledge case took place just five years after the Betty and Barney Hill case, which was also in Vermont. The aliens seemed to be favoring New England at that time.
