A Valentine Memory………. For Honey Sweetness…….My Forever Valentine…..
The sky was cloudy and overcast without the promise of sunshine. Planning for the last couple of days for a nice Valentine’s day outing. But the weather in Northeastern Kentucky and its unpredictability in winter, that afternoon the snow began to fall with an accumulation of several inches. Too much for travel to be safe. Since going to a nice restaurant having Valentine’s dinner was out of the question, bringing a Valentine’s celebration home would have to do. Prepping a Valentine’s dinner…….. The trick would be keeping honey sweetness out of the kitchen…… ********************************************************************
It started out…with a theme to use….Deciding on decorating the kitchen reminiscent of a 1950’s 60’s Café would be whimsical and fun… There was enough red, pink and Valentine décor to achieve the desired effect. With large, small red and pink hearts of various kinds….heart shaped boxes, heart shaped garland….heart shaped candy.. It was beginning to look like a Vintage Café... Baking a heart shaped cake complete with cupcakes.
Pink icing covering the cake and with a little smidge of food coloring added to the pink icing after the cake had been decorated, the mixture of the red with the pink created red icing for the cupcakes. White lace tablecloth with pink, red accessories spread across the table.. Gel hearts, heart shaped napkins. Heart shaped balloons…. Red candles strategically placed around the crystal vase filled with red silk roses, with red, gold and pink ribbon streamers… A small amount of gold and silver glitter on the table cloth with angels and cardinals placed in the center of both the prepping island and dining table. Red and pink teddy bears from Valentines of years passed adorned chairs at the dining-table.
A couple of times it was a close call as honey sweetness was getting a little impatient to see what was happening in the kitchen on that snowy afternoon. But the final preparations were almost complete. The pot-roast was nearly done, liking 10 to 15 more minutes….Understanding completely the enticing aromas coming from the kitchen assailing Honey Sweetness from his recliner in the living-room. No doubt he was hungry by now. *smiles from the memory*
With special occasion dinner china , salad plates and dessert bowls taken down from inside their display cabinet, placed on the table… filling each of the two plates with tender roast, carrots onions, celery….sides of mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, a salad of mixed greens with dinner rolls.
Taking one last look at everything from on the table and the decorations throughout the kitchen……. Walking into the living room, with a smile and a kiss announcing dinner is ready. Honey sweetness smiled and asked, “it’s ready!?” Yes it’s ready and I hope you enjoy everything. By his reaction, he was very pleased and happy. We couldn’t go out to celebrate so I thought I would bring the celebration Home…….~Happy Valentine’s Day, my Love~
He looked around in the kitchen, at the dinner table and said: “this is better than any restaurant, but under different circumstances, we deserve a break, too. But this is very----very nice, you’ve missed your calling, I think.” His beautiful brown eyes showing appreciation. The roast turned out close to perfection if I say so myself…..so tender. Everything was good and enjoyable….. it made Honey Sweetness happy…. He loved the cake and the smaller cupcakes….having a small piece with cool whip and fruit cocktail for dessert, topping our Valentine celebration dinner.
Afterward, cleaning up, putting every thing away….. I went into the living room sitting in my recliner next to his…… He handed me an envelope containing a very pretty Valentine’s Day card, it simply said: “To The Woman I Love” And written within the card, so much more. He then, reached behind his recliner for a shopping bag, inside was a pretty little Teddy Bear adding to my collection, with a heart shaped box of chocolates and another small box. I opened it, and inside were a matching pair of very lovely earrings and a medium-sized box of my favorite perfume collection…..He handed me a vase of a dozen roses……
I felt maybe I could have given him something different---As I sit here listening to a little bird singing its song so sweetly.....I think If it had been possible, I would have given him the world....the Moon and the stars...moved heaven and earth----but I gave him a Valentine Card and a Marine Corp Cap with an American flag pendant to place on his new cap, a grooming kit, small tool set, a red and black flannel shirt that I wear today over a red turtle neck blouse and I gave him a pair of Levi’s. It started snowing more on that evening, I slipped outside on the frozen porch as the boards creaked underneath my footsteps and took a few photographs of the falling snow sparkling like diamonds in the late evening sunlight.
Grateful, thankful for Blessings from The Lord, for His love, His mercy and grace……..we watched a few good movies and appreciated the love, the laughter, warmth and tenderness we shared together…… He once said to a close friend of his….. (Always in my Prayers, Marion) …..”No one has ever loved him as much as I do.”
