Well, my friends of USM, I have come to ask for more prayers for my best friend, Jim. It's confirmed: he has terminal cancer!
He got the final confirmation a few weeks ago. I went out to visit him. We hugged, we laughed, we talked old times, and we cried a bit. We've been friends for more than forty years. He's helped me through the worst times of my life, and I've always known that if I ever needed to vent, or anything else, I could call and he'd always listen. It's going to be hard to live without that. We always laughed about being the two Old Man Muppets, Waldorf & Statler. Now, there's just going to be one of us.
His doctor told him that if he does preventative chemotherapy now, he might gain a year, maybe more. If he does nothing, then he'll be dead in a few months. The cancer has spread too far for any kind of surgery. Chemo can blunt its progress, but nothing can stop it.
I've signed off on my friend's papers, and he's told me that he's already bought a plot.
All we can do now is pray. In his words, "I've had a good run."
He's got a positive attitude, though When we were talking about the end, he smiled and said, "The good news is that I'll be the first person to welcome you into Heaven. I'll be there to show you around, just like always."
