From the Los Angeles Times, September 20th, 1919:
"$5,000 offered for a Haunted House. This is a genuine offer."
***********************************************************************
The address for a Gentleman's Club (which has since disappeared) was given as the location where all such offers could be made.
That amount of money at that time was the equivalent of about four year's salary! Whoever this guy was, he was not hard up for cash. But why offer so much up front? He had to know that he would get dozens of frauds lining up to compete for the money.
I have yet to discover if this mystery man ever got what he wanted. How it changed my life:It didn't, but I wonder if the rich man's life changed? Did he ever find a real haunted house? And if he did, what on Earth did he want it for?
