1.I believe language is about communication and if this person will the only person on an island they would have no need for communication. Unless they want companionship with wildlife But yes, I believe this person could create a language. Kids do it all the time 2. Yes I believe it would be possible for an individual to consider the prospect of how they and other forms of life were created. Native Americans have their own varying belief system on how life was created 3.I believe so, because it would be all about surviving if this person is on the island the only other competition for resources would be the wild life. And also if this person has any empathy.  |

Hi Desert Lotus, Interesting insights! Just some comments on your comments though! 1) Children do create their own languages but they see language mirrored by the adults, other children, and media around them. If a child had never heard language before, could they create language? 2) Native Americans also had a society and community of peers. If it was just one person with NO human contact ever, could they consider the prospect of life? Or would they be more like animals? Your comments really made me think!   |

1. I believe that could come up with language whether it would be vocal or written. However, if they are the only person and what purpose would language serve. Would it be too maybe record certain events? Look at petroglyphs. They could be considered form of language or a form of recorded event. 2. Well I really think it depends on how much compassion and how they view the other creatures around them. Do they see them as equals or eat some, but at the same time also respect the fact that they are killing another creature. |

1) I think that they would probably be able to produce symbols and then assign them a meaning. I am not sure about the language, other then produce sounds that only have meaning to them. 2) Perhaps nature itself to them could be some spiritual form, perhaps just the realization that they are alive. 3) Well I imagine if they were by themselves and had no one around, that would lead to a lot of thought internalization. They may question their meaning of existence. Very thought provoking stuff!   |

Very interesting answers, Hangman! Thank you for your input I agree that he could assign his own meaning to certain symbols or utterances, but he wouldn't be able to justify this meaning without the benefit of a community. |
