It all started while I was a Senior in high school. I was in Vocational class and signed up to work for a vendor who serviced Braniff airlines at the DFW terminal in Irving TX.
Everything started normally, eventually I was assigned to be a trainee, along with a two person team, a Driver and a Helper. I was told that this crew was the best and to learn from them how to excell at the job.
We loaded up into the High lift van which was filled with metal containers in rows along the sides, these containers varied in size and contained liquor and food. We proceeded along a secure road and entered the airport and parked out on the tarmac.
The first thing I shown was how to assemble the screwdriver goblet. This required knowing where the large silver goblet was, the ice, orange juice and the vodka. As trainee it was my job to keep the goblet full and pour for any guests that pull alongside the van.
The next job was to identify the First class meals container and find the lobster and steak, these were passed out and consumed with almost Viking like gusto.
About every couple hours we would service a plane I'm sure, but all I could remember was the large number of service vehicles that surrounded our truck.
Drinks, smoke and stories were flying around fast and furious. It was a circus. I recall the driver telling me that the Feds had arrested a baggage handler for lifting a package containing diamonds.
By the end of the shift I was a little woozy but was told by the crew that I had to come with them back to their place because they had something to show me. I tried to get out of it but went along.
When I got to the house I found out they had lifted a box of live paroketes and before I knew it they opened the box and let the whole group of birds loose in the house.
Of course they wanted me to take some birds but I declined explaining that my mom had cats and they would make a mess.
I was finally able to get home and was very tired, thus ended my first day on the job.
