Hi. My son married a foreign exchange student. We went to her home country where they did not know English but made sure their daughters were familiar. So here is my story: There was a bunch of us going sight seeing all day. So her mother came up to me and with a big smile said "Go get the bread". So I smiled that I understood and grabbed the bread and off we went. Four hours later hungry and tired we pulled over amid no- where but statues, ... and no where to eat. They happily went to the back to get the food and her mother came shaking her head and kindly but lost asked "Where"- now I pointed to the bread. Mother and daughter conversed and the daughter fell over laughing- the mother meant to ask me for the sandwiches. 10 hungry people had only bread and water to eat in the middle of no where. We laughed and at least laughter is universal... and so is bread and water. |

I will always have Christmas 2000 in East Germany in my heart. We went to my daughter in law's country for the millennium Christmas/ New Year. Well by the time we got from Texas to … 2 blocks from Poland I was tired and wanted sleep and a bath because tomorrow was Christmas evening and in a place that did not have my language I was unable to communicate my needs. So I took matters in my own hands- locked the bath room door on 6 people and a cat with the big black skeleton key they kept handing me and took my bath- I am ashamed to tell how long… but I really needed a minute or two. I came out with wet long hair and in my pink pajamas and fluffy slippers (I was going for international fun girl slumber party). Carmen- her mother- took a long serious look at me- carefully sat down and looked away. Then she turned and carefully said questioningly "In that?" Well the long and short of it- I had lost track in the international time zone- This was Christmas Eve and we were leaving in 15 minutes! I shifted gears and was ready in time and would not have missed what was about to happen to me for the world. We walked on Christmas eve evening for several blocks with big fat snowflakes landing on my nose. And people were joining in the parade. We settled into an ancient church with no electricity or plumbing from the Renaissance era. The paintings from the 'old testament and new' were painted from ceiling to wall with the stained glasses refracting from the moonlight. The candles served candelabras hanging and dripping from the ceiling were enough light to read the lyrics in the tattered German Texts. We were singing in German Christmas songs I knew in English. It was heart chords I am glad I did not miss. |

Wow, Celtic River .. that sounds like an absolutely awesome experience. I'm sure the feeling as you sat in that church was magical. Inside nothing had changed in hundreds of years, but outside the door the date had changed. Stepping back in time for a brief time |
