Okay I want to tell you about my garden gnome. He is so fun. He stands about two feet tall and has a wonderful red hat and a pleasant full happy smile. He is a new addition and we placed him peeking through our copper bush as you approach our red front door.
Anyway the other day, in the morning in our back yard we have a covered wrap around porch and it had a beautiful soft tepid rain floating down. I brought my 3 house plants: Lavender, Lily, and Blossom, out to enjoy the humidity and catch what sum rays they could. Then I pulled my terrified schnauzer out of the house and wrapped her up in a blanket, crawled up in a chaise lounge chair- a gift from my neighbor's garbage., and began my morning celebration.
That evening- well, my beautiful rain turned into terrifying hail. Hail was bouncing every- where. Hail was bouncing in and bouncing up and bouncing down. Our covered patio protected much of our windows- - but could not stop the awful ping- pong effect of ice bouncing balls. Then- we still are not sure if it was the wind or sirens but the whistling started and rain and hail took a horizontal effect and we gathered in the center of the house with Heidi too, and my husband and I listened with what our eyes could not see the harsh staccato of the Hail hitting our house- and then it was over.
Next morning I was out looking around and from the street I looked to my peek a boo Gnome and, oh, no-his face was all cracked. He was still standing. Cracks all over his playful face and a hole knocked out his mouth. As I took one dread full step toward him, and then another step- I looked away, the hurt was too much. He was so recent, so new, so life- inspiring, so happy. From my peripheral I saw I had closed in on the garden, coming too soon to the destruction zone.
And then, I caught my- self and brought up my questioning fingers. I brushed the poor Mayfly's legs spread over my Gnome's Face and then turned and picked up a neighbor's blown in magnolia leaf and with it disentangled it's smashed body from my Gnome's mouth and lowered the bug to rest in the ground.
As a philosopher at heart I cannot pass up events to not parallel with. So I take this as a reminder that next time something seems broken, maybe it's not broken, maybe it just needs some bug- fixing, How it changed my life:or maybe the lesson here is that there is Gnome-thing better than Gnome-ing it all.
