Costco and Red Lobster Joins a Host of Retailers Refusing to Sell GMO Salmon

U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) controversial approval of AquaBounty’s genetically modified (GMO) salmon has garnered further backlash from national grocery stores and restaurant chains.

“The market is rejecting GMO salmon. Stores won’t sell it and people don’t want to eat it,” said Friends of the Earth Campaigner Dana Perls. “Now other retailers like Walmart and restaurants need to follow suit, and we need mandatory GMO labeling so that consumers know how to avoid GMO salmon.”

Costco, the second largest retailer in the world with 487 stores and one of the largest retailers of salmon and seafood in the U.S., has made a firm commitment not to sell GMO salmon.

“Although the FDA has approved the sale of GM salmon, Costco has not sold and does not intend to sell GM salmon at this time,” the company said in a statement. Costco’s move to reject GMO salmon comes after vehement opposition from anti-GMO activists.

According to a statement from Friends of the Earth, Walmart and Publix are among the last remaining large retail grocers in the U.S. that have not yet rejected GMO salmon.  More than 60 grocery store chains representing more than 9,000 stores across the U.S. have made commitments to not sell GMO salmon, including Safeway, Kroger, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Aldi and many others.

The nation’s largest seafood restaurant is also denying GMO salmon. Red Lobster, with 705 North American locations and more than 40 internationally, told the Dallas Morning News that it would not sell GMO salmon last Friday.  Incidentally, consumers might not even know they’re eating GMO salmon. AquaBounty’s salmon, which is genetically altered to grow to market size in half the time of conventional salmon, will not require a GMO label under FDA guidelines.

It’s unclear if we’ll will ever see labels for genetically altered food, period—not just salmon. Currently, the hotly contested Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act—dubbed by opponents as the Denying Americans the Right to Know Act or DARK Act—languishes in the Senate.

Food advocacy group GMO Free USA alleges that Stabenow is working to include a provision in the bill for a QR code on products to inform consumers about the presence of GMOs.

“Not on-the-package labeling but a QR code that requires a smartphone,” the group notes in a Facebook post.

Proponents of the QR code argue that it would provide consumers with information on the product without signaling there is anything wrong with it, The Hill reported.

Critics counter that the QR code prohibits consumers without a smartphone and the appropriate app from knowing whether there are GMOs in the product.

Date: 2/16/2016 4:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    Good for Costco, Red Lobster and all the stores that have made the commitment to refuse the GMO salmon. Now they just need to realize that all GMO foods should be identified. We as the consumers should be given the right to know where our food comes from and what it is made from.

Maybe if we all put more pressure on our politicians, they would feel the heat and get we the people more representation for our food. It seems the most basic of rights!

I remember a time in the 90's going to Twin Lakes in Upper Sierras and catching some hybrid trout/salmon and the meat was red and delicious like a salmon. Not sure how that fits in but I do remember that.

Date: 2/17/2016 12:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 62927    I do believe in regulated farming... but genetically altered, well that is different. In Germany, the part where we went, their stores were literally the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker- and if you went to the fish store you would meet a person and tell them what kind of fish you wanted and how big and... and they would go get the scoop net- just so weird.

Date: 2/17/2016 9:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 13283    I will need to put the pressure on Walmart . I will cancel my membership at Sam's Warehouse and switch to Costco . This movement is getting huge . Before no one was talking about Monsanto and GMOs . People are waking up ! I am wide awake . I will protect my brothers and sisters while they remain in slumber . They are in an induced slumber because of all the toxic fluoride they put in our water supply . Oh my goodness , what a huge karmic debt these people will have to pay .

Date: 2/18/2016 5:09:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28363    RoyalUzi - You are always on the fore front with awareness for the masses. It's not always a glorious topic and don't expect much feedback but it is an important subject. Thank you for your opinion.
Date: 2/18/2016 9:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    I do so agree with RoyalUzi and you Donno. I can only speak about what I see here in the USA, but it sure seems that the 'public' could use a good ole mental flushing to wake them up to the dangers we are finally hearing about. People on the whole do not really seem to be all that concerned, until something actually can be demonstrable and kill one of their family members.

I wonder how much is being done to us, without our knowledge?

Yes, we definitely see first hand accounts of fishing done wrong. We have a large grass roots effort here to protect our seafood, coastline and Pacific wildlife and sea life. The protesters arrive in the masses to show the voice of what needs to be done. Big business doesn't always agree though.

I don't want to eat even most farm raised salmon, because of the chemicals that are fed to them to regulate everything down to the color of their flesh. Yes we eat with our eyes, but seriously enough with the propaganda big business

Costco is showing the world that they can make a profit and be a big player in the game, without putting their customers in danger. The Costco location I go to is one of the first to be built in our area back decades ago, and the ex-CEO and founder Jim Sinegal still visits regularly. He seems to want to make sure that the legacy he started ... continues.

Date: 2/19/2016 6:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28363    I know what you mean. When it comes to farm raised salmon vrs natural caught it can be such a difficult decision because the farm raised need all the chemicals and "modern" science, while the fresh caught have pcbs and other toxins from the local environments.

It appears to be a complicated tightrope of having toxins coming at us from multiple directions simultaneously.

I also wonder if Microsoft is trying to push everyone into windows 10 because it has some special ability to capture and retain more, if not all, data. Maybe you could have Radman comment on that possibility please.

Date: 2/19/2016 5:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    George (Radman) worked at Microsoft for over 5 years in several capacities in the software development side of the company. From his experience Windows is appropriately named. It is more windows to leak your data than you may even imagine. They do not really attempt to shut the windows to intruders either so your computer and data is protected. They are more reactionary at best. Once they get too many reports and complaints, they will do a 'work around' to make it appear that the problem is solved .. but the actual issue is still hiding behind the scenes.

George quit working there and never looked back. It is really a wonder that they are so huge with the way they operate.

Just to give you an idea about how large Microsoft is here in our city, we are just 58,000 residents. However Redmond’s population jumps to about 140,000 from 9 to 5. Redmond has largest daytime population surge in US. Yes, the residents here don't plan to actually get anywhere during the rush hours. We plan our days around Microsoft!

And with all that workforce, some of their products are still filled with junk. How does a company with that much potential fall so far behind the curve?

Date: 2/19/2016 6:44:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28363    hmmm, that's not good news. but about what I suspected. Does he (or you) recommend an operating system that is not 'out to get you'?
