National Institute of Health : The role of Cannabinoids in adult Neurogenesis

Abstract

The processes underpinning post-developmental neurogenesis in the mammalian brain continue to be defined. Such processes involve the proliferation of neural stem cells and neural progenitor cells (NPCs), neuronal migration, differentiation and integration into a network of functional synapses within the brain.

Both cell signalling cascades and neurotrophins, neurotransmitters, cytokines, hormones, and signalling molecules are intimately associated with adult neurogenesis and largely dictate the proliferative activity and differentiation capacity of neural cells.

Cannabinoids are a unique class of chemical compounds incorporating the active components of Cannabis sativa, the endocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoid ligands, and these compounds are becoming increasingly recognized for their roles in neural developmental processes.

Indeed, Cannabinoids have clear modulatory roles in adult neurogenesis, probably through activation of both CB1 and CB2 receptors.

In recent years, a large body of literature has deciphered the signalling networks involved in cannabinoid-mediated regulation of neurogenesis. This timely review summarizes the evidence that the cannabinoid system is intricately associated with neuronal differentiation and maturation of neural progenitor cells and highlights intrinsic/extrinsic signalling mechanisms that are cannabinoid targets.

Overall, these findings identify the central role of the cannabinoid system in adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus and the lateral ventricles and hence provide insight into the processes underlying post-developmental neurogenesis in the mammalian brain.

How it changed my life:

I think what this is saying is that activating these receptors will help you with regrowing neural pathways in the brain and that it acts on the immune system on the one hand and the rest of the body, mind, skin etc on the other.

My neighbor friend suffers from memory problems and chronic seizures, it kind of starts with a sleeping sickness problem where he can't get out of bed and has total memory failures and fatigue symptoms, and then coma. He has been in ICU 3 times this year. He is yet to be diagnosed but is being treated with seizure medication, Kepra. I try to help him remember things like passwords, use his phone, his business cycles, what he had been up to the day before, week before and so on.

I'm trying to talk him into getting some CBD oil and trying it, I'm worried he's not going to make it much longer at this rate. Take care

Date: 12/30/2015 12:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    This is an interesting article. I have mixed feelings when thinking of weed and CBD oil. I know some people who have become very addicted to partaking of these substances, even though they say it isn't possible to be addicted. One friend started slow, but within months couldn't face her children in the morning without lighting up in the bathroom. Then it would continue all day long with excessive use before they got home from school and into the night.

The people I have known who used CBD oil, and other derived substances from cannabis have come to call the oil 'stupid juice', as they have seen a marked decline in their mental states and a heavy dependence on the substances with trouble withdrawing.

What I have seen locally may not be the full story. I can say that I have indeed tried 'weed' a few times, and have come to the conclusion that I don't have the brain receptors for it. It basically does nothing for me, just like morphine ... zip .. nadda .. nothing. I did not know about my inability to get pain relief from morphine until the past two surgeries where the morphine drip did nothing in my IV.

I'm so sorry to hear of your friend Donno. It is so sad to see someone declining in health like that. I wish him well, and who knows .. maybe the oil might help him. Best of luck and he has my prayers.

Date: 12/30/2015 1:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28363    Very interesting, I keep forgetting a lot of this is old news to many. I never met anyone who ever used CBD oil and I find it very interesting you mention 'stupid juice'. Now the type of CBD oil I envision is low THC (makes you less stupid) but high CBD.

I would expect it to have no inward or outward symptoms, but heal at an internal level. A person with seizures may not notice anything happening except that the frequency of seizures subsides. I would like to notice an immediate affect in memory or neural processing and would expect it to show results. Same for inflammatory issues and auto-immune and other major issues.

They made this very type of low THC (CBD) oil for a child in Colorado who had seizures, called charlotte's web oil. It doesn't make her stupid due to the low THC content. Did you try CBD oil for something? I have a high tolerance for dental sedation in my mouth. Sometimes taking multiple shots to get through oral surgery for example, and then still feeling the shots till I past out in the chair.

Thank you for your concern and prayers, you are such a treasure. Have nice evening
