A few times we have been very fortunate to sail out into the blue waters of the ocean in search of sea life. We went on day cruises to try and find Killer Whales (Orca's). We were very successful one time and found a wonderful large bay where 8 adults and two babies were enjoying a leisurely afternoon. The boat stopped for about 2 hours so we could hear the tour guide talk about the breaching, spy hopping and general playing the Orca’s were engaged in. We were especially surprised to see the 2 juveniles jumping out of the water so many times.
The touring boats as well as pleasure crafts are not allowed to get very close to any whales. So we all were really excited when two of the larger adults came swimming to about 30 yards from us. They disappeared under the water for a few moments, and then both leaped completely out of the water at the same time. The guests aboard along with myself and my husband were awestruck, but it was the gasp from the tour guide over the loudspeaker that really told us that we were seeing something unusual. She said that she had never seen that kind of breach so closely in the several years she had been conducting the tours.
Now for the best news about the pods of Orca’s we enjoy here in the ocean off our shores. We seem to be a baby boom that we haven’t enjoyed since the mid-1970’s.
The news proudly shares new information about the youngsters with the viewing public. We now know the names of 4 of the newbies … Scarlet, Nova, Sonic and Windsong. They are working to confirm and name one more sighting of a baby in the L or J pods.
I’m so thrilled to see the rebound of this magnificent creature !!!
"I've never seen a baby whale breach like J50's been doing. Her energy is astounding – I guess not unlike my small kids. It's definitely a joy to watch." said the Executive Director of the PWWA Michael Harris.
