I was driving to my mom's house after class to pick up my little toddler. My mom lives in a rural part of New Mexico, and houses are typically a few acres apart from each other, down a dirt road. I've always loved that, because peace and quiet is something you can find there. I grew up there, and every day was filled with climbing rocky hills and sitting outside on the swingset at night, trying to count stars. My daughter loves it there too. The solitude is really a wonderful thing. Occasionally though, I remember that it scared me from time to time, but never like this.
There is one particular neighbor who lives down the road a bit. They had a dog for several years living on a chain (that is legal here unfortunately). He eventually chewed the wooden slat that anchored the chain to the rotting dog house and broke loose, ending up at our house. A wonderful friend of mine met him and fell in love. She took him to the vet immediately because he had bleeding wounds all over his body, and found out he had severe skin cancer. $800 and a three hour surgery later, she took him home and now he is an extremely loved and spoiled dog. In any case, whenever I drive by, I sort of hold my breath because I am afraid they have gotten another poor animal to torture. This time, as I was driving by, I saw something really weird. At first it looked like a really tall, stretched out dog and I thought oh no, they got another one. But on second glance, the animal looked so strange. It was very tall, with extremely narrow legs. The snout was shorter and pushed in and the rest of the animal's face was kinda flat. It held perfectly still and just turned its head to watch me as I went down the road. Honestly, I was already freaked out but I backed up because I wanted to get another look...I am almost 8 months pregnant and I am the mama of a very, very active 2 year old, so I am super sleep deprived and I wanted to make sure I wasn't losing it finally. Again, it just turned its head slowly to watch me pass but didn't move an inch otherwise. Same crazy looking stuff! Impossible dimensions, and creepy expression. My heart jumped into my throat, it felt like I was looking at a real life nightmare in broad daylight. Sort of paralyzed, I just stared for a minute. Eventually, it turned its head toward's the neighbor's house and I got the that impression whatever it was, it's business wasn't with me.
I put it in drive and raised a lot of dust getting to my mom's house.
I've seen plenty of coyotes, wolves, and I've been around a lot of different dog breeds. But I have never seen anything like that before. The only thing I could think of hit me way later: skin walker?
