How do you get a dog to stop chasing cats? -Ramses

Curently I am using the words "Leave It" with a harsh tone and using the leash to strike my boot close to the dogs snout but not actually hitting her. She is very timid with my voice and gets low so force is not necessary.

She will listen eventually usually the forth or fifth strike on the boot, I dont want her afraid of me and I dont want to hurt her.

I have tried to get her close to the cats have her lay down and she can tolerate that in small doses - five minutes max.

Then she goes wild trying to go after the cats and no matter what I do, does not deter her in the least.

Any ideas?

She's a German Shepherd about 8 years old.

Date: 9/9/2014 5:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    I think if your dog has not grown up with the cats you have, you might be fighting an uphill battle and I think it is normal for dogs to chase cats...I've had dogs and cats that were babies together and they get used to one another...sorry I can't offer any other advice..
