A more current update on my mom.... *KorngurlAmanda*

Hi everyone.

First, I'd like to say, thank you to Paula, for keeping you all updated. With everything going on, I could honestly barely put a string of thoughts together properly. My family and I really, completely appreciate you and getting the word out, sweety. <3

As most of you know that have read Paula's post, my mom has been going through a lot. She had a colonoscopy last Tuesday. She woke up Wednesday, in pain.  Dad (Art- Wooden Nickel) took her to the hospital and she was admitted. Sometime on Thursday, they let her go home. Friday, though, she was in so much pain that she could barely talk. Dad got her back up to the hospital. I don't know why, but it took until later that night-- and the Specialist came in and said, basically, that she needed emergency surgery. Without it, she wouldn't make it at all. With it, she would have 40-60% chance on getting better- however, typically people don't survive this kind of thing.

Her small intestine had kinks in two places. He explained it was like taking a waterhose. Placing hands on both sides, and squeezing down. It made the middle section necrotic and without the surgery, she wouldn't make it. We were all shell shocked at that news.

He went through the surgery, and had to remove all but 20 inches of her small intestine. He left it unattached except to a tube.

She came through the surgery better than he expected. I asked him though, to level with me, what did he think her chances were. And his answer to me was, "Typically, we do not see people survive with this kind of thing."  and "she might not be able to eat or drink, but get nourishment through a tube/iv"

Those words echoed. He wanted to give her body a few days before going in, and reattaching things, and reversing the bypass that she had.

After the surgery, her vitals stayed pretty much good. She did have to be put on blood pressure medication and get transfusions of blood due to all the medicines going in and thinning things out.

He went back in for surgery on Monday, and when he came to the door, I think we all held our breath. He told us, after we were all out in the hall, that it had went well--- a lot better than he thought and that he had underestimated her strength. He seemed elated, even though he's the reserved sort of doctor. He even said he could foresee her eating soft like foods and drinking again, possibly.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today this is the update I put on FB:

I just got back not too long ago from visiting her in the ICU. She is more awake and aware. Her eyes lit up seeing my dad, my sister and me when we walked in. She gestured to hold her hands.

She was mouthing sentences to us. She asked me if I was okay, I told her I was okay. Then asked my sister the same, and she said she was okay. We told her how strong she was.. and she looked a little scared-- then said:

"The doctor came in at 5 and told me I have to have surgery tomorrow." Her face looked like she was scared. I looked at dad, and so did Tamara, and he said, "No, sweetie, you don't." And we told her that she'd already had two surgeries and was in the ICU recovering from them.

We had to even get the nurses in there to tell her the same. So, she was thinking all this time that she was still going into surgery and has lost time. She looked relieved once she understood that she had already been through the surgeries. She asked how she got there, and we explained briefly, how everything the last week has went, and that she still has the vent in.

The nurse explained to her that the vent is being used more as a CPAP machine right now, and that she's doing most the work. She will probably be able to have it removed sometime tomorrow.

As we were leaving, she smiled and said she loved us and she'd see us tomorrow when we were able to get there.

Her vitals still all look good. The nurse said she was on the uphill.

Hearing and seeing this has helped my anxieties and worries, so much. She still could use all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes for the coming days and while she heals. They are working.

Praise the Lord, through ALL of this--- because, seriously, from last week til today--- I think we've been through the whole gambit of emotions and thoughts, fears and seeing her stay strong and fight through--- exceeding all expectations! So humbling and thankful for it all so much right now. Hoping she keeps up being so strong as these next hurdles come through!

Thank you SO Much, to everyone!

And, sorry this is so long. From our whole family and MOM too, thank you so much!

~Amanda

My sister, my sis-in-law and me all have been trying to keep everyone updated as best as we can. My sis-in-law has been so awesome updating people. Those first couple of days, I could barely even get on the computer, and when I did, I could barely type because I'd lose it. <3

Between here and FB, there will be updates. <3 At least to the best of our ability. Leanna may even come in on here and update too. <3

Thanks hun. <3

Date: 6/13/2014 1:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    It's amazing how far your mother has come in just a few days. Thank you so much for the lovely update. It is so much better to get the news from the source .. rather than wishing and hoping things are doing well. My prayers will be going strong for Gail until she is completely out of the woods. I pray for strength for Art and your whole family too. This ordeal is so hard on everyone.
Date: 6/13/2014 8:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 53427    Wow, your mom is a fighter! So glad that the prayers have worked and there is improvement. I know there is still a long way to go. But, we will be praying for her. Gail is a USM legend. We care a lot about her here, and you too Amanda. Thanks for the update! Big hugs!!!

Date: 6/13/2014 2:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 37830    Hi All,

It's Leanna (Gail's daughter in law)

Here's an update on Mom (Gail Shackelford-Brickley Gould)! We just got back from the hospital. She is still on the breathing tube, but they said they're taking it OUT tomorrow! Yay!!! She is even more alert today, making jokes and funny faces, and laughing with us! God is SO good! She was watching the Food Network on tv and I think she actually was salivating a little bit! hehehe
Thank you all again for the continuing prayers on behalf of the entire family. There is sooo much power in prayer and together, we've proven that!
Much love! xxxooo
Date: 6/13/2014 6:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28190    <3 Thanks everyone.

Please read above my reply to Leanna's (My sis-in-law).

Mom looks a lot better today and was able to communicate better with her clipboard. <3 Her stats all look good, and while she is in pain and uncomfortable-- she's definitely troopering through everything and hanging in there. <3

I still want to hit my knees and praise God, everytime I think about this whole situation. <3 <3 <3

Thank you all so much <3 <3 <3
