Makaha Elementary School has a huge playground encased by fence. On the left side of the school playground, there is a grassy area stretching out for miles. Around 10pm - midnight, in the silence of the night, you might hear drumming echoing from the school grounds. It would sound like people at a party - mumbling or talking, but if you listen carefully, it is people chanting with drumming sounds. Sometimes it gets louder...this goes on for nearly 30 minutes. Other times, the chanting and drumming is faint. There are no homes where the music and voices are coming from; just the grassy area and school. How it changed my life:This made me realize that knowing the history of Hawaiians are important. I think about the past all the time, for they are my ancestors.
