I live in Vereeniging where (at least the final part) of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902) took place amongst many other places. Concentration Camps were set up in various locations, some remembered, some forgotten. Now, in our backyard we have a Scottish Soldier in kilt standing guard at a tree my parents plant 40 odd years ago.
He still does his patrol rounds every night an stands guard at that tree to this day.
In 2002, 100 years after the end of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War, every night from early evening till late we we could hear clanging noises in the veld in a distace. Friends visiting would hear these noises and ask about them, we had no explanation to offer. The was no work being done that would require picks & shovels and a large scale labour force to work at night. The noise stopped as mysteriously as has started.
