Eish! That Dog

1994, The year Nelson Mandela was freed, my fisrt job, my first set of wheels, turning 21 and the freedoms that come with all that.

Many firts for me including my first sighting of an animal ghost!

I had joined a church group and the youth group. The youth meetings were every Friday at the church. In my story "Disappearing Act" I mentioned Devilliers Ave, and it is in this very street I had my first nasty (and strange enough in both directions), almost right in front of the Fire Station.

The church where youth meeting were held was on the outskirts of the CBD which for a city is rather small, so it wasn't too far from home and I could vary my route home very little. Meetings ended at 22H00 with us fooling about before going home.

The church was in Joubert st which runs perpindicular to and into Devilliers Ave, so it was basically a straight ride to Devilliers Ave with a left turn into Devilliers Ave. I would sometimes take Leslie St (which runs paralell with Joubert st if I stopped at the post office.

It was in the winter of 1994 when I had been on my way to youth at about 18H30 (it was already dark then) when this little black dog about the size of a Maltese poodle suddenly darts out some house on my right straight toward me and I'm riding 60km/h on a bike and now I have to slow down very quickly to avoid hitting this dog without killing myself. Not a nice senario for a novice! I safely make an emergency stop with a metre between me and the dog there it vanishes in the tree's shadow on the sidewalk. Gosh! I thought: not even a bark! No warning what so ever!

This happened twice more. I then left earlier (and later took another rooute) to avoid this whole occurance. Here's the scary part a few weeks after I changed my route going in to town, on my way home, it was at this time at 23H00 I had use my emergency stopping skill once again for the same reason, a little black dog darting out of a house across the street in front of me, this time vanishing in the middle of the road.

I never took that route again after that. Although I still take with the car, I try to avoid driving it at 18H30 & 23H00 in the winter.

How it changed my life:

I never took that route on the bike again
