Wal-mart Allows Looting of Food~Psyguy

Walmart shoppers cleared shelves and filled shopping carts to overflow after a software snafu removed spending limits from their EBT cards. Police were called to help deluged clerks at stores in Springhill and Mansfield in northern Louisiana Saturday night.

There were no injuries or arrests after the feeding frenzy caused by a power outage during a routine maintenance test by Xerox of their government-funded debit cards. Store managers called Walmart headquarters for guidance and were told to keep ringing up customers, KSLA-TV reported.

“We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards during the outage so that they could get food for their families,” said Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling. The stores recorded all transactions and managers were investigating how to proceed, she said.

It’s not clear how long the computer glitch lasted. Once shoppers realized the problem had been resolved, they abandoned their carts and fled the stores.

I read on another site that said a woman had 49 cents on her card, and yet walked away with $700 worth of food.

But hey I put the blame on Walmart for doing this. All the other states decided to do the right thing, and not allow the cards to be used while the glitch occurred. While Wal-mart basically just lost thousands to tens of thousands on food.

To me it's not stealing if they allowed this to happen, but to be fair the EBT cards should be altered to how much they purchased if Wal-Mart tracked the purchases, send it to the state and figure out how much the card holder spend, and match it how much they receive. So if the person took $600 worth of food, and only is allowed $150 the wouldn't get their next amount for another 4 months.

If you know you have .49 cents on your card and you spend 700.00, you are a thief. You know it is a mistake and you are using it anyway. Look at it this way...If I say, "hey Joe, can I borrow 10 bucks". You tell me "Yeah, my wallet is in my room. Grab a 10 out of it". If I were to get more after we agreed on 10, I would be stealing from you. Same thing to me.
Date: 10/15/2013 12:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    I see where your coming from but like I said the State should not allow any money on the cards 'til the amount they took comes up.
Or they should go after the card holders and make them pay up since they took the information on the cards.

Date: 10/15/2013 1:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 15394    How odd and irresponsible on all sides. Wal Mart is stupid for honoring what they had to know was a glitch, the people were stupid for stealing, and the state is stupid for honoring the cards once the mess was over. Its tax payers that have to pony up now for the debt the card holders rang up. Not sure if I would hold their food money for the next ... however long it takes them to pay it back, but a portion of it for sure. Makes me kinda mad. If you are getting a hand up by receiving the card, how can you bite the hand that is feeding you? Kinda sickening!
Date: 10/15/2013 2:07:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    I hope Walmart foots the bill and takes the loss. I hope the taxpayers don't foot the bill.
Date: 10/15/2013 2:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    Both should be held accountable, walmart for allowing it when they knew it was a glitch AND the people using it because it is theft.
Date: 10/16/2013 11:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    This happened in my neck of the woods. I used to drive through Mansfield alot. Everyone there was in cahoots to make this work, Walmart should not have allowed it, basically reverted into looter mode. Let's just say going there, you'll hear the dueling banjos song everywhere. They are talking about theft charges for those who exploited this.
We shall see.

Date: 10/16/2013 12:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 48250    I still say this company should be Unionized.....but be as it may, If I owned over a billion dollar retail industry, I'd be compassionate and reach out giving to Others, too......afterall their own employees can work for them and still receive EBT Benefits..... T/C
Date: 10/16/2013 6:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    Walmart lost NOTHING from this... if anything they "gained" by the free publicity. I don't shop at Walmart since it is basically owned by another Country now.
Date: 10/17/2013 9:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 31765    The lady with the seven hundred dollar purchase didn't get away with it.

My family receives SNAP benefits, what used to be called food stamps. I'm sure glad they got the problem fixed by the time we went shopping. There's no way we would have taken advantage of the glitch and in fact I didn't even know anything about it until we went shopping.

The way I see it is this. Many people rely upon their food stamps to survive. Being an insulin dependent Type I diabetic, we have to buy certain foods to keep my blood sugar stable. Sometimes, we do end up shopping the night our food stamps deposit. I'm actually glad that Walmart let people use their SNAP benefits even with the glitch because some people, like us, may have gone hungry without it. And Walmart didn't lose anything by doing so. There's no publicity like free publicity. And imagine the BAD publicity any store would have received had they turned anyone away.

We are in a depression. More people are relying upon SNAP benefits than ever before. I believe I read a statistic that said 15% of Americans now receive SNAP benefits. Of course there will always be those who abuse the system. But some, like my family, worked their whole lives until a disability struck me. Now my husband has to spend his time taking care of me and my elderly mother. No shame for us. We supported those who needed it until I was stricken with illness and rendered incapable of working anymore. And all in all, this glitch didn't really affect that many people because benefits are applied by case number. Meaning, for example, if your case number is thirteen, you will receive your benefits on the thirteenth of the month. So most likely it only affected those who received their benefits on the certain day of the glitch. It would be a shame to punish everyone for something just a few did.
