What are they going to teach instead of spelling? I don't think they thought into this very much. Spelling, in my opinion helps with reading, so I think learning to spell is a high priority in education. Just my two cents. |

My question is, when did some of the teachers ever care whether kids know how to read/spell in the first place!? Why are they just now mentioning this as if it is something, "new"....what a joke!....I have talked to some former students I attended school with who confided that they felt like they were not ever taught very well by some of the teachers..... they leaving a lot to be desired.....& even kids today say that they felt like they were simply ushered through the school system.....& it seemed that some of the teachers could care less whether they learn a thing or not......Good Post, Joe.....T/C |

Reading/Spelling is vital to our livlihood therefore its extremely important in my opinion, although it has been obvious not as important as some so-called educators seem to believe over the years, I cannot believe this issue has been approached in the manner it has why don't they discuss the fact why is it kids throughout the years have lacked in getting a good decent education...... |

Spelling and grammar are the backbone of our language,(and I'll throw in punctuation just for a grin) and of every language. It needs to be kept in the curriculum in every school. |

I think some teachers are against spelling tests weekly, which some districts demand. As for spelling, I think you can teach it in many different ways. A lot of the time spelling is taught through ELA, word walls, reading, writing, etc. I know during my student teaching this debate was going on about spelling homework and spelling tests, which they felt weren't as useful for teaching as say if a child writes something than has to edit their writing, hence fixing all spelling mistakes. I know the majority of homework I see assigned to younger students is spelling homework, but I tend to lean toward writing and reading- which goes hand in hand with spelling. I think it is especially important to teach spelling but I think we might have to come up with more creative ways instead of just memorizing the words for a test. The best way to learn to to be engaged and interactive. But at the same time, a teacher should conduct tests throughout the year to see a students progress. Interesting debate |

I believe that spelling is the foundation for every other subject that is taught. If you can't spell how can you read? Reading is a big portion of studying and studying is vital to learning. What has become so important in the curriculum that they need to replace spelling? The standardized tests? Isn't reading comprehension part of most normal standardized tests? Again, spelling and reading go hand in hand, you can't teach one without the other. |

They shouldn't stop teaching spelling, this is something I struggled in when I was in school and I even repeated 2nd grade because of it. If I didn't I most likey would have had a very hard time throughout my school year. Spelling is very important even in these days with spell check. You dont realize how important it is until you struggle with it. |

No. They definitely should not. Especially in the era of texting. Kids are already forgetting how to spell simple things due to auto-correct. |

I can't STAND how poorly we spell as a country now. I think its very valuable and if my children's teachers won't teach it, then I will by golly!!! |

Reminds me of a time when a teacher told me that we shouldn't teach children how to read first, we should teach them grammar first! So, how does one learn grammar if one can not read? There are a lot of people out there that are completely backwards. |

I say its 100% important. We can't have our future generations, lacking basic English. I think we would be setting ourselves up for disaster. Personally I believe there is already too much aid in regard to spelling and school in general thanks to the World Wide Web. |

Oh God, this frightens me. I think spelling, writing, and reading should be taught MORE. I see so many people with atrocious spelling, it makes me sad. Writing is an art, even down to the simplest letter or email, I just hope we don't lose that art. |

In the movie "Goodbye Girl, Richard Dryfus's Character explains acting to his roommates child." Word are the colors with which I paint my characters". If some teachers want to eliminate spelling, they are striping away the ability of grammar and punctuation to create dialog, action, and emotions. I do advocate reading banned books along side the classics they inspire thought in the individual to exercise freedom. It is this freedom of the mind to understand an idea, he or she can say opinion for or against its message. You end spelling you end individual comprehension of important documents and books, like the U.S. Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and the holy books of his or her faith. The masses would be led to be dependent on those in charge to have the corruptive power to tell people this is so ,when in fact its not. In short, yes dumping spelling in schools is a stupid and dangerous thing. |

Oh my lanta. Here is a story. I was in my COLLEGE biology class and this girl behind me was complaining that her English teacher took off points because she spelled night "nite". If college kids are already having problems spelling night than how are they going to learn to spell if schools get rid of it? |
