In the book of Exodus, in chapter 32, Moses had gone back up on the mountain to receive the rest of the commandments, this is, the rest of the laws of God, or the rest of the instructions. Moses was up there for 40 days and the people were worried that he might have died. At this point, Moses was their mediator between them and God.
Exodus 32.8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I have commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Isreal, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
When studying using the concordance and lexicon, the Hebrew word for God is Elohim, now the 'im' at the end of a hebrew word can mean quantity or quality, depending on the context used.
The translator(s) chose to use the word gods (plural) when refering to a single molten calf, however, since their mediator (Moses) has been gone for over a month, they have no way to communicate with God to find out what has become of him.
They have very recently been led out of Egypt by God and God has actually spoken the 1st ten of his commandments to them with his own voice, therefore there has not been enough time for Isreal to forget who led them out of Egypt.
While they were in Egypt, they knew that the Egyptians used all sorts of idols to try to communicate with their gods that were no gods at all.
Even though Isreal made the molten calf to symbolize God in a similar fashion as the Egyptians did to their gods, God still took that as worshipping a false god because of His 2nd commandment, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shlt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God...."
Even though Isreal wanted to communicate with God, he expressly told them not to do it in that way, God does not want us to worship Him in the way we want to to worship him, but rather to worship him in the ways He told us to.
This is much the same thing that happened with Cain and Abel, where they knew that they must do an offering using an animal, but Cain chose to make an offering from his fields and God did not accept his offering, it should have been an offering from the flocks not of the fruit of the ground. Apparently, Cain chose to do it his own way, instead of the way that was prescribed.
In all of these things, are we as believers, worshipping the LORD God, our Elohim, creator of the heavens and earth and all things that were created, in the way that He has told us to, or, are we as believers, worshipping God the way we want to and when it is convenient for us?
I am not asking for personal answers from anyone, but just posing a question for your own personal consideration.
I also urge all who may question these things to do some research of your own, and seek the truth about what the Word of God truly has to say.
May God bless you and reveal to all, the truth, and not to let poorly translated versions of His Word lead you astray, or cheat you out of the blessings that we could all have, simply by understanding and doing his instructions=laws=truth.
Psalm 119.151 Thou art near, O God; and all thy commandments are truth. Psalm 119.152 Concerning thy testamonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them forever.
