Have two and a half days in Washington DC, what should we see?

We're going to Cedar Point,  Niagara falls than on to Washington DC although I did consider stopping at Gettysburg.  The one firm thing I do want to see is the Holocaust museum, we already have tickets and reservations for that.

I was thinking about taking a night tour of all the monuments our first night (if we don't stop at Gettysburg we should get in early enough for that).   Also read some reviews on ghost tours that look like fun.  I'm torn on going to Mount Vernon.  I really want to go, but that is going to take up at least part of a day.  It's about a 40 minute drive from our hotel, we're staying near Dupont circle or we could take a boat.  Our hotel is further than I want to be, but hotels near the center are super-expensive.

Which of the smithsonians should we see??  Air and Space or the American History museum or some other??  Any other recommendations??

Date: 7/8/2013 7:16:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I think we need at least a week to see everything!
Date: 7/8/2013 7:18:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I bet Anom is talking about the Washington monument! LOL. We can't go up that, it's still being repaired from the earthquake.
Date: 7/8/2013 9:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 21903    Oh, good, I was going to tell you if you want to see the holocaust museum to get tickets! I DEFINITELY recommend the night tour, that's what my hubs and I did on our honeymoon there last summer on our first night there. we had about 3 days there though. The night tour will help you squeeze in most of the main monuments. The FDR memorial was beautiful. Also, if you think seeing the Lincoln memorial is likeiIt is in the movies, you are sorely mistaken (i was)--it was about the MOST crowded memorial n the city. You will see FDR on the night tour with many others. I don't think it stops at the WWII memorial --which is in my top three. I can't remember if it stops at the Jefferson memorial-I tend to think it didn't, but i would see that. The hubs and I didn't really do the museum thing, so
. Can't recommend anything there. We did go to mount Vernon though and having done a bus tour there it took more than half our last day there, but if you're driving you can knock it out quick. I won't say you HAVE to go there, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!! Have fun while you are there and please excuse any typos-I'm on my phone and Lord only knows what autocorrect errors have been made!

Lol. I don't know if its open yet to go in. I know last summer, which was it was still closed front the quake they had there. Lucky you if it is open!
Date: 7/8/2013 10:33:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Thanks Lizzle, we'll definetly do the night tour than. I'd really like to see the wwII and the Vietnam memorial...So I can't sit on Lincolns lap?? LOL What area did you stay in? I looked at taking a boat to Mount Vernon which would be cool, but the boat leaves at 830 and doesn't return until 3, so I don't know. I think I just want to park and not move the car again. The museums are open until 7 in the summer, so I can drag the family through at least one of them..they'll love it. Really.

Date: 7/8/2013 11:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 21903    Kelly,I believe we stayed at a Hyatt really close to the capitol building. I think it es just 2 or 3 blocks from there. what really helps you get around and get everything in are those hop-on-hop off bus tours. Can't remember the cost, but it does allow you to park and not move, which I think is definitely the way to go!

Date: 7/8/2013 9:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    The location that absolutely moved me the most in the area was the Arlington Cemetery.

God Bless.

Date: 7/8/2013 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 66331    Hey, your going to be very close to me lol Air and space is a must! There is just so much to do in D.C. hard to fit it all in, guess it depends on how long you will be here. Then again I have lived 20 mins from D.C. for 3 years and still haven't seen it all
Date: 7/17/2013 6:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    I went to Gettysburgh and drove to Washington DC a few years back, awesome trip! If you have the chance I couldn't recommend Gettysburgh enough, it's awesome there they have the battlefield tour, haunted walks, Lincoln's address, monuments, cemetaries, so much! It's a really nice town too. We stayed at the James Getty hotel. My boyfriend and I drove down to Washington DC the day we left Gettysburgh just cause' and it was really nice. There is ALOT of walking so dress comfortable. I would say visit all the momuments, the WWII memorial is beautiful and there is also the Vietnam Wall. You can visit Ford's Theater as well. There is also a Hard Rock Cafe there, it was delicious! Hope you have an awesome time and one thing I wanted to do but didn't have the time was visit the Holocaust museum, so let me know how it was!
