This happened a little over two months ago during spring break. My roommate and I shared a bunk bed with me being on the top bunk. With my roommate gone and nothing better to do, I was sitting on my bed watching movies when I had to get up for something. As I was coming down, I lost my footing and fell, landing right on my knee. Just imagine: Someone roughly 220 pounds falling from a height of around six feet and landing directly on their kneecap. From what I've looked up, you don't even need ten pounds of pressure to shatter someone's knee.
It hurt so much that I thought I had broken my leg and at first, all I could do was swear and pant and grunt. In the back of my mind, I remember thinking, 'I hope no one's hearing this. It sounds so inappropriate.'
I ended up having to drag myself into the next room (our dorm room was sectioned off into two rooms) so I could get my phone in case I needed to call an ambulance and haul myself into a chair. Thankfully, I was able to stand up with no issues, but it was so hard to bend my knee, which was skinned and bleeding from the rough landing on the carpet.
I didn't need any medical assistance, but it would have been nice if the health center was open. For some reason I still can't fathom, the health center was closed for spring break when there are drunk students on campus who are most likely going to get hurt while intoxicated.
For the next, like, month or so, I had to get down the stairs by holding onto the railing and the wall and hopping. Going up, I had to stand on my tiptoes and then pivot my hip so the foot of my injured leg could go on the next step. It was a very tedious process, but it healed up soon enough where I could walk up and down the stairs normally. My knee still kind of protests certain motions, but otherwise I can get around.
Looking back, I'm very glad my roommate wasn't there because in hindsight, that's a pretty embarrassing way to get injured.
The moral of the story? Bunk beds are dangerous. Never trust them, for they will betray you and you will be left to hobble around for all eternity.
